Recapish
Gabriel
Ynoa was effective and efficient for the Las Vegas 51s Thursday night, holding
the El Paso Chihuahuas to just one run over 8 innings for the teams 6th
win in 7 games. The top 4 batters in the 51s lineup couldn’t get anything going
against El Paso starter Daniel McCutchen, but the bottom half had his number,
which led to an easy 7-2 win in the desert.
Ynoa
lowered his ERA to 1.77, which is second best in the PCL, still behind Julio
Urias at 1.50. It was another sinker heavy effort for Ynoa, but he also threw
more sliders than normal. He’s mostly been upper 80’s with the sinker over his
past few starts, but he was still able to dial his fastball up to 93 MPH in the
8th, although I’m guessing that was a four seamer.
El
Paso did manage 11 baserunners against Ynoa, but 4 of them reached in the 1st,
when the Chihuahuas jumped out to a 1-0 lead. They might’ve scored more in the
1st, but Ty Kelly made a great throw to nail James Loney at home,
which ended the inning. Great defense became a theme behind Ynoa in this start
– he’s been the team ace and he keeps his fielders involved, so it’s nice to
see the team step up behind him. T.J. Rivera and Marc Krauss made some nice
plays at the corners, with Rivera starting an inning ending double play in the
3rd.
Nevin
Ashley tied this game up with a solo blast leading off the 3rd
inning. Big Marc Krauss used his surprisingly not terrible speed to pick up a
hustle double and steal 3B in the 4th inning, which sparked a two
run rally for Las Vegas. Matt Reynolds picked up an RBI double off the LF wall,
which is great to see with Wilmer Flores moving to the DL for the Mets – they
might want a backup SS option soon, and the alternative (T.J. Rivera) is more
of an emergency SS.
Travis
Taijeron’s 10th double of the year sparked another two run rally for
Las Vegas in the 6th. He added a solo blast in the 8th,
which was his 5th homerun of the year. At his current pace, if he
finished 2016 with the same number of PA as in 2015 (478), he’d see an increase
of 14 XBH from last year’s total of 50 (22 2B, 3 3B, 25 HR). This game was a
perfect example of his game, as he took huge cuts and whiffed through more than
half of his swings, but two of the swings he did connect on caused serious
damage.
This
series continues Friday night at 10:05 PM, with Stolmy Pimentel (0-2, 8.20 ERA)
scheduled to make the start for Las Vegas.
