Recapish
The
Columbia Fireflies wasted a solid start from Tyler Badamo Saturday night,
failing to convert on several scoring chances in a 3-2 loss to Asheville.
Columbia scattered 7 hits over the first 8 innings but they couldn’t scratch
any runs out until the 9th, when they’re comeback rally came up one
run short.
Badamo
gave the Fireflies length while limiting Asheville to just the 3 runs, but the
Tourists had a chance to score in every inning. He was throwing mostly
fastballs and sliders against a right hand dominated lineup, and Asheville
spent a lot of time going the other way against him. Although he allowed an
extra base hit in every inning, he only really had to labor through the 4th.
At
the plate, the Fireflies missed David Thompson’s RBI producing bat in the
lineup. J.C. Rodriguez picked up 3 hits from the 3-hole, but the Fireflies
couldn’t come through with runners on base. Dash struck out with two runners in
scoring position in the 1st inning, and then grounded out with
runners on the corners to end the 8th. Fireflies OBP leader Vinny
Siena came up with the tying run on 2B in the 9th, but he’d
groundout to end the game.
I
break down the offensive details with highlights and add a Fireflies pitch log
below, so enjoy! This series wraps up Sunday in Columbia, with Joe Shaw (2-2,
3.71 ERA) scheduled to make the 2:05 PM start.

Scoring Highlights
Vinny
Siena and J.C. Rodriguez hit consecutive doubles in the 1st inning,
but Siena had to hold up at 3B, and the Fireflies would leave the bases loaded
in the frame. J.C.'s second hit is the third GIF posted
Milton
Ramos and Jose Garcia singled in the 7th inning, when Columbia left
stranded another pair of baserunners.
Jeff
Diehl ripped a double of the left center field wall to spark a 9th
inning rally. He came home on Ivan Wilson’s RBI doulble, and then Jose Garcia
knocked in Wilson to make it a 3-2 game. Vicente Lupo singled to put the tying
run in scoring position with only one out. Unfortunately Kevin Kaczmarski would
go do swinging and then Vinny Siena hit a groundout to his counterpart to end
the game.
Defensive Highlights
Jose
Garcia didn’t have time to get up and make a throw to second base, but he steal
nailed the runner trying to steal!
Tyler
Badamo handled the slow comebacker nicely in the 1st inning.
Vinny
Siena had to make a last minute dive to catch this pop out in the 3rd
inning.
Kevin
Kaczmarski ran a long way and then made the catch as he went into a slide to
end the 5th inning.
