Recapish
The
Columbia Fireflies offensive woes continued Monday night against highly
regarded Braves prospect Touki Toussaint & co. Cola starter Chase Ingram
matched Touki tit-for-tat over 7 sparkling innings, but the Braves exploded for
four in the 8th against Johnny Magliozzi to take game one of the
series 5-1.
Chase
Ingram only finished with two strikeouts in this start, but he picked up 10
swinging strikes, had a healthy 21% Whiff/Swing rate, and posted a ridiculous
70% groundball rate on balls in play. The only run he allowed came on a
grounder misplayed by J.C. Rodriguez at 3B that would’ve ended the 2nd
inning. The 7 innings thrown represents a career high, and collectively the 6
Columbia starters combined for 42 IP the last turn through (P.J. Conlon went
6.2 IP, but Thomas McIlraith lasted 7.1). Luke Dykstra, son of Lenny, had two
of the hits against Ingram, including a double pulled just out of J.C.’s reach
and down the LF line.
Touki
Toussaint finished with 5 walks issued, but Vinny Siena worked 3 of those
walks, and Touki mostly cruised against the rest of the lineup. However, it was
Touki’s teammate Matt Custred who stole the show for a few innings. Custred
struck out 6 of 7 Columbia batters during one stretch of his 3-inning outing.
Johnny
Magliozzi took over for Ingram in the 8th and ran into two out
trouble. With a runner on 1B and two outs, Rome doubled and homered off him in
consecutive at bats to jump ahead 4-1. The Braves would add one more in the
frame on the Fireflies third error of the game. Nicco Blank then took over and
retired the final 4 Rome batters in a row.
The
Fireflies finished with 3 hits, which you can check out below, so enjoy! You
can also check out a Fireflies pitch log with details and highlights (including
Touki’s K’s) at the bottom. This series continues Tuesday evening at 7:05 PM,
with P.J. Conlon (5-0, 1.23 ERA) scheduled to match up with Mike Soroka (1-3,
1.96 ERA) in what’s sure to be another pitcher’s duel.
Scoring Highlights
Vinny
Siena took his first of 3 walks leading off the 1st inning for Cola.
A force out put Kevin Kaczmarski on 1B for J.C. Rodriguez, and he singled up
the middle with Kacz running on the pitch, which allowed Kacz to go to 3B.
David Thompson then added to his RBI total with a sac fly hit to LF.
Dash
Winningham lined the first Touki pitch of the 4th inning over Justin
Ellison’s head for his 9th double of the year.
Kevin
Kaczmarski picked up his 5th double of the year with two outs in the
8th inning.
Defensive Highlights
The
Fireflies turned a pair of double plays behind Ingram, one in the 1st
and one in the 7th.
