Recap

51s lefty Duane Below couldn’t repeat his efforts from his last two appearances, when he needed less than 100 pitches for a complete game win, and then the Las Vegas pen let this one get out of hand, as they lost for the second straight night in Nashville. Below was similarly effective Saturday night, relying more on his defense than missing bats, but that strategy doesn’t always pay off. The Las Vegas lineup has cooled down some over this past week, and that trend continued against Nashville starter Sean Nolin, who was effectively wild through 4 IP, and then the Sounds bullpen. The 51s would jump out to a 1-0 lead in this game, but Below couldn’t get the crucial third out in the 4th or 6th innings without first allowing an RBI single. Scott Rice came in with two on and one out in the 7th, and he failed to retire any of the 3 batters he faced, 2 of which were lefties.
This series continues Sunday afternoon at 3 PM, with Steven Matz scheduled to face off against Barry Zito in a matchup of: young vs. old, hard vs. soft, future vs. past.

Recap

The B-Mets pitching put them in a hole that even the 51s offense would struggle to overcome on their best night, as the B-Mets lost their second straight against the Curve. Robert Gsellman’s AA debut did not go well Saturday night in Altoona, as he allowed as many runs as he had in his first 6 starts with St. Lucie thanks to poor control of his fastball. Michael Conforto also made his AA debut, walking in his first 3 plate appearances before finishing 0-2 in the last two innings of the game. Of most immediate importance to Mets fans was the relief appearance of Bobby Parnell, who was pitching on consecutive nights for the first time this year, and who was abused for 5 runs in just one third of an inning. The B-Mets offense was led by the trio of Gavin Cecchini, Eudy Pina, and Aderlin Rodriguez, who have been the hottest three hitters in the lineup lately (only three some games). Also from the bullpen, Dario Alvarez has really struggled at times this year, and is looking like a candidate for removal from the Mets 40-man, if needed. Matt Koch has been excellent since he was moved to the pen, and this scoreless appearance lowered his ERA to 0.53 in 17 IP over 10 appearances since that move. Julian Hilario allowed two walks, but was overall much better than he has been so far with AA, so hopefully he can build on this.
This series wraps up Sunday evening at 6 PM, with Seth Lugo looking to salvage one win for the B-Mets from this trip.

Weird Day of Mets Minors Promotions, With More Likely Coming; Jhoan Urena to DL

Less than a year later, this signing is already looking very promising

Recapping the Mets minor league players who changed rosters yesterday, and an update on Jhoan Urena.

UPDATE: Amazin' Avenue's Jeffrey Paternostro said it's a hamate break in his podcast, at around the 49 minute mark

Friday started with the expected promotion of Michael Conforto from A+ with St. Lucie to AA with the Binghamton Mets, but the rest of the day’s moves were unexpected, and Jhoan Urena ended up on the 7-day DL in the FSL. First, a quick list of the moves made:
-       Jayce Boyd officially joined the 51s roster in Nashville
-       Michael Conforto was promoted to the B-Mets roster
-       Yeixon Ruiz was added to the B-Mets roster
-       Jhoan Urena was moved to the 7-day DL
-       Stefan Sabol was promoted to the St. Lucie roster
-       Alfredo Reyes was added to the St. Lucie roster
-       Tucker Tharp was added to the St. Lucie roster
-       Joe Tuschak was promoted to the Savannah Sand Gnats roster
*I used added for players I don't expect to stick with their new rosters for the remainder of the season

The Highlights:

Pitchers

Darin Gorski – 4 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 2 SO, 2 HBP, 89 Pitches (51 Strikes), 6 FO
Logan Verrett (1.93 ERA) – 3 IP, 2 BB, 2 SO, 3 GO: 4 FO
Zack Thornton (3.68 ERA) – 1 IP, SO, 2 GO

Batters

Matt Reynolds – 2-4, R, 2 SO
Alex Castellanos - 2-4, SO

Recap

Darin Gorski didn’t give the 51s length Friday night, but he left them in a good position to come back for a win if their bats would wake up. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen, as 16 of the final 19 batters were retired (and one runner was erased on a GIDP). Gorski would allow all three hits that Nashville managed in this game, but the Sounds would add another 7 base runners combined between 5 BB’s and 2 HBP’s. Teams should generally win when their pitching staff only allows 2 runs on 3 hits (especially in the PCL), but the 51s could only muster 4 hits themselves, with Matt Reynolds and Alex Castellanos providing a pair of singles each. Logan Verrett was the first to replace Gorski, and he was very good over his three innings of work, allowing only the 2 walks. Brandon Allen made two weird plays in the game, not yielding to Cory Vaughn twice, which caused a minor collision between the two the second time. The first time was on the Nashville sac fly, and it was especially weird to see Allen cut off Vaughn for two reasons: Vaughn has a much better arm, and Vaughn had a much better angle on the catch-and-throw.
Check out more on the little offense from this game below. This series continues Saturday night at 7:35 PM, with Duane Below scheduled to pitch. Below has thrown a complete game on less than 100 pitches in consecutive starts.

Recap

The Binghamton Mets lost a closely fought pitcher’s duel in their opener against Altoona Friday night. Starter Michael Fulmer set a AA-season high with 5 strikeouts, but he was effectively wild (and throwing hard, stadium clocked at 96 MPH multiple times), allowing only 1 one run despite 4 walks. The B-Mets took a 1-0 lead early, but Altoona was able to bring home a leadoff double in the 3rd to tie the game. That’s where things stood when Bobby Parnell entered in the 7th, and he looked poised to maintain the status quo while looking sharp against the first two batters. He lost the third batter (Adam Frazier) to a walk, and Frazier would steal 2B after getting little attention from Parnell. The next batter would pull a chopper through a hole on the right side of the infield to give Altoona a lead, and that was that. Parnell was hitting 92 MPH with consistency on the stadium gun, but B-Mets announcer Tim Heiman was questioning the accuracy of the gun. After a hit in each of the first 5 innings, the final 15 B-Mets batters of the game would be set down in order.
The B-Mets continue their series in Altoona Saturday at 6 PM, with Robert Gsellman and Michael Conforto scheduled to make their AA debut’s.
