Recapish
Scheduled
to play two in Portland Friday, the B-Mets took a 1-0 loss in the opener before
rain cancelled game two. As you can imagine, the game was dominated by great
pitching, and it took a walkoff infield single for the Sea Dogs to finally
scratch out a run in the 7th.
Barbosa
was facing Portland for the third time already this year, and the Sea Dogs had
a patient approach against the big lefty. They only managed a pair of singles
against him, but the three walks drawn led to some huge scoring opportunities:
Barbosa stranded a runner on 2B in the 1st inning; worked around a
bases loaded, one out situation in the 3rd inning; and left two
runners in scoring position with only one out for Luis Mateo in the 5th.
Mateo
did a great job to get out of that jam on two weak groundouts, including one
that he fielded himself. Mateo found himself in a jam of his own making in the
6th inning, but he’d end the frame with a strikeout of Derek Miller
to keep the game scoreless.
Considering
it was a 7-inning game, it didn’t take long before you got the feeling that
whoever struck first would win this game. The B-Mets had almost 0 scoring opportunities
in this game, while Portland had 4 good scoring chances to score over the first
6 innings, but they just couldn’t scratch out a run. That changed in the 7th
against Beck Wheeler, when Henry Ramos and Jose Vinicio sparked the game’s only
rally with consecutive singles. After a sac bunt moved them over, Nate Freiman
brought home the winning run on a grounder to 3B.
I
break down the highlights from this game below, so enjoy! Since they couldn’t
finish the double-header Friday night, these two teams will try to do so
Saturday, with game one scheduled to start at 1:05 PM. Rainy Lara (2-3, 3.38
ERA) and Tyler Pill (2-3, 4.62 ERA) are expected to start for Binghamton.
Scoring Highlights
Stefan
Sabol picked up the B-Mets only hit leading off the 3rd inning, but
he’d quickly be erased on a double play.
Defensive Highlights
Henry
Ramos robbed Matt Oberste of extra bases for the third out of the 4th
inning.
