Recapish
The
Columbia Fireflies won their finale with the Drive Tuesday to earn the 4-game
series win for the second time in Greenville this year. Columbia starter P.J.
Conlon’s ERA dropped even lower after allowing 0 earned runs over 6.2 IP, and
now sits at 4th best in the SAL at 1.23. A pair of wild innings from
the Fireflies pen allowed the Drive to come back and make this a very tight
game at the end, but closer Alex Palsha was able to wrap things up in the 9th
before it was too late.
With
a 1.23 ERA and a 29 K: 4 BB ratio through 36.2 IP, it’s pretty clear that
Conlon has been too good for the SAL, and I don’t think he’ll have many more
starts at this level. The Drive threatened against Conlon in several innings,
but they rarely got more than one baserunner on in the same inning. Conlon
worked around a two out double in the 2nd, a leadoff double in the 3rd,
a one out triple in the 4th, and a one out double in the 6th
– this is another deep Greenville lineup. That’s a lot of extra base hits, but
the Drive managed 0 other hits against Conlon.
P.J.
retired the first two of the 7th, but an E6 kept the inning alive
for Greenville, and manager Jose Leger went to the pen with his starter at 98
pitches. Leger went to Nicco Blank, who would probably like to forget this
outing. Blank issued a pair of walks before allowing a grand slam to Mitchell
Gunsolus that suddenly made this game interesting again.
Christian
Montgomery pitched a dominant 8th inning, so Leger went with him to
start the 9th. Unfortunately, Monty walked 3 of the 5 batters he
faced in the frame, so Leger brought in his closer with the tying run at the
plate. Kyri Washington greeted Palsha with a two run single to CF, which made
this a one run game with Austin Rei due up. Palsha won the battle by getting weak
groundout to 1B from Rei that ended the game.
The
Fireflies left for home after the game to start a series with Asheville. They
have an off day Wednesday, but will be back on MiLB.tv at home Thursday! Thomas
McIlraith (1-2, 4.85 ERA) is scheduled to make the 7:05 PM start for Columbia,
and I am pumped for the increased coverage!
Scoring Highlights
J.C.
Rodriguez and Vinny Siena both singled before an out was recorded in the 1st
inning, but the Fireflies couldn’t get either in, even after a double steal
moved them each into scoring position.
Joe
Tuschak walked and came around to score the first run of the game in the 2nd
inning. Ivan Wilson singled him to 2B and then Jose Garcia took a walk to load
the bases. A Vicente Lupo walk brought in the first run of the game, and a sac
fly off the bat of J.C. made it 2-0.
Columbia
took advantage of some more wild pitching from Greenville and a Joseph Monge
error for 3 runs in the 4th. Dash Winningham picked up an RBI single
to RF in the frame.
The
Fireflies added two key insurance runs in the 7th inning, and David
Thompson got the rally going with a leadoff single to CF. Jeffrey Diehl singled
him home two batters later, and the Drive’s wildness brought home the second
run of the frame.
