Recapish
Mickey
Jannis’ knuckleball found the strike zone nearly 75% of the time in Monday
night’s series opener with Richmond, and that’s generally all he needs to do to
have success in Double-A. The B-Mets offense remained quiet, and needed to
rally for a walkoff win in the bottom of the 9th after Akeel Morris
blew his third save in the top half.
There
were no CF shots of Jannis pitching, so it was hard to tell location, but 17 of
23 at bats ended in a strikeout or groundball, which suggests he was finding
the bottom of the zone consistently. He’s not likely to control the zone like
this every time out, so he’ll need to show that he can give more on those off
nights before he moves to the next level. Jannis had to deal with a single
baserunner in each of the 1st, 2nd, and 6th innings,
and had a stretch of 10 straight set down at one point.
Beck
Wheeler worked a perfect 8th and continues to pitch like the B-Mets
best reliever. He doesn’t have the stuff Akeel Morris has, or even Logan Taylor,
but Morris has blown a few saves, and Taylor hasn’t shown the same level of
consistency with his command yet.
Morris
allowed a solo blast to Christian Arroyo with two outs in the 9th
inning to extend the game. He had K’s the first two batters of the frame, so it
was a really unexpected turn of events. Fortunately, the B-Mets were able to
rally for a walkoff in the 9th. Matt Oberste and Dominic Smith led
off the frame with singles, and L.J. Mazzilli dove head first into 1B to avoid
a tag and allow the winning run to score with two outs.
The
Binghamton Mets announced a bullpen shakeup after the game, with Tim Peterson
and Alberto Baldonado expected to come up and replace Mike Hepple and Kelly
Secrest. Check out the scoring highlights from the game below! This series
continues Tuesday night at 6:35 PM, with Tyler Pill (3-3, 4.32 ERA) scheduled
to make the start for Binghamton.
MiLB.tv Scoring Highlights
Victor
Cruzado launched his 4th homerun of the year with 2 outs in the 2nd
inning – off the billboard beyond CF.
L.J.
Mazzilli and Matt Oberste both hit doubles to the wall in
this game.
Dominic
Smith led off the 7th inning with his 9th double of the
year, but the B-Mets couldn’t get him home.
After
Richmond tied the game top 9, Oberste and Smith got the bottom of the 9th
started with consecutive singles up the middle. L.J. Mazzilli would eventually
come up with the bases loaded and two outs in the frame. He hit a slow grounder
down the 1B line that became a race to the 1B bag, and Mazzilli dove head first
into the bag to avoid a tag. The game was over once he safely touched 1B, as
Matt Oberste had already crossed the plate as the game-winning run.
Dale
Burdick got a pinch-hit opportunity late and flared out to 1B. It’s not much, but not sure how much other coverage of Burdick I’ll get during his
stay.
MiLB.tv Defensive Highlights
Mickey
Jannis started an inning ending double play in the 2nd inning.
