Recapish
The
Columbia Fireflies dropped game two of their double-header with Charleston 5-2
Tuesday night, as they just couldn’t find any offense after the 3rd
inning. Cola starter Darwin Ramos made a decent, though inefficient, return to
the Fireflies in this one, but ultimately left down 3-2 after five. Both teams
went to their bullpens for the 6th, and while the River Dogs pen
went into shutdown mode (4 IP, 5 K: 1 BB, 1 H), the Fireflies pen had a rare
rough outing, which allowed the Dogs to extend their lead to 5-2.
Darwin
Ramos spent most of his ‘extended spring training’ pitching out of the bullpen
for the Fireflies and the St. Lucie Mets instead of the on backfields in St.
Lucie, but he was sent to those backfields in June to be stretched out as a
starter for the Cyclones rotation. He’s shown good swing-and-miss potential all
year, which has helped him strikeout 60 batters in 57.1 IP across the three
levels, but he’s allowed a cumulative .271 average with 28 walks issued.
Ramos
struck out Oswaldo Cabrera during a scoreless 1st.
Steven
Sensley hasn’t been in the SAL long, but he’s played two series against
Columbia in his first week with Charleston, and he’s been beating up on
Fireflies pitching. He greeted Ramos with a solo blast in the 2nd
and he’s up to a 1.000 OPS over 19 AB against the Fireflies after this game.
Ramos issued a walk to Pablo Olivares two batters later and Oliveras came
around to score on an E3 to make it 2-0.
Jay
Jabs cut the Dogs lead in half with a solo blast in the 2nd.
Ramos
hit Dalton Blaser to start the 3rd inning and the Dogs eventually
got him around on a sac fly to extend their lead back to two runs.
Columbia
got that run right back in the bottom half of the 3rd to make this a
3-2 game. Andres Gimenez singled, went to third on Franco’s second hit of the
game, and then came home on a groundout.
Ramos
worked around a single in the 4th and then tossed a perfect 5th
to finish his night on a high note. He added a 5th inning strikeout
of Isiah Gilliam to his tally and was much more efficient at the end of his
start.
Unfortunately
for the Cola faithful, the Fireflies bats went cold after the 3rd,
and this game had little else to get excited about. Arnaldo Berrios gave those
that stuck around until there were two outs in the 9th some
excitement when he connected on a triple, but that was the only Cola hit after
the 3rd.
Adam
Atkins took over for Ramos in the 6th and worked a perfect frame,
starting his night with a strikeout of Olivares. He stayed out for the 7th
and did something he hadn’t done since the last day of May: he allowed an
earned run. Atkins had allowed just one unearned run over his previous 18
appearances, a span of 23.2 IP during which he posted a 24 K: 5 BB + 2 HBP
ratio with just 13 hits allowed (11 singles, 2 doubles).
Keaton
Aldridge came out of the pen for the final two innings and started his night
with a strikeout of Dermis Garcia. He also allowed a run in his second inning
of work, which gave the River Dogs their 5-2 lead.
Looking
ahead, these two teams wrap this series up with a rubber match Wednesday night
at 7:05 PM. The Fireflies have Harol Gonzalez (8-8, 3.74 ERA) scheduled to
start for them, so they should be guaranteed at least a quality start, as he’s gone
6+ with 3 ER or less allowed in 13 of 18 possible starts – rain knocked him out
early during one outing that was on pace to be a quality start.
Perseids what? Did you forget about them in all the eclipse excitement? Don't miss their annual show this weekend! https://t.co/dTIOLIVuSo pic.twitter.com/UeyHOHn6Fp— Sky & Telescope (@SkyandTelescope) August 9, 2017
