Recap

Duane Below tossed his best start of the season against El Paso Wednesday night, but Jeremy Guthrie was better. Guthrie allowed a leadoff homerun to Dilson Herrera on his first pitch of the ballgame, but made few mistakes after that, and his teammates scratched out 4 runs of support for him.
Below allowed a pair of doubles early and both came back to burn him. 51s killer Casey McElroy hit a one out double to CF in the 2nd inning and came home one batter later on an RBI single from Yeison Asencio. Below retired the first two in the 3rd inning, but then issued a walk to Manuel Margot before Carlos Asuaje hit the second El Paso double. Asuaje was thrown out at 3B on the play, but not before Margot could score the go-ahead run.
After the leadoff homerun from Dilson, the 51s wouldn’t pick up another hit until the 5th, but Guthrie walks and a HBP gave them scoring chances in the 2nd and 4th innings. They had another great chance to break even in the 5th, with red-hot Brandon Nimmo at the plate and runners on the corners, but Guthrie induced an inning-ending double play grounder to shortstop.
El Paso added another run in the 8th against three Las Vegas pitchers, two of whom Mets fans are curious about. Erik Goeddel allowed a leadoff single and sac bunt before getting the hook. Josh Edgin threw 10 pitches and only 3 went for strikes (see a pitch log below). He walked a batter and then allowed an RBI single to James Loney. Manager Wally Backman then went to Chase Bradford – Mets fans don’t know Bradford yet, but he is off to a very strong start – and Bradford retired the final two batters of the frame.
Las Vegas was handed a gift scoring opportunity when reliever Derek Eitel walked the first two (Dilson and Nimmo) in the 8th. Unfortunately, El Paso then brought in flamethrower Jose Dominguez, who was hitting 100 MPH with his fastball. Dominguez would strike out T.J. Rivera for the first out and Travis Taijeron for the final out of the frame, but it’s what happened in between that stung.
Before Johnny Monell could work out a walk, Dilson Herrera tried to push the envelope by stealing 3B, but catcher Rocky Gale threw him out easily. Aggressive baserunning is generally encouraged, but that’s a mistake Dilson won’t be making again. There was no sign to steal, so Nimmo didn’t advance behind him, and his run isn’t enough to tie the game.
This series continues Thursday night at 10:05 PM, with Gabriel Ynoa (3-0, 1.91 ERA) scheduled to pitch opposite Daniel McCutchen (4-1, 5.56 ERA).
