2016 Monday Morning Mets Minors Players of the Week #3

Wuilmer Becerra (31) is a big dude

April 25-May 1, 2016

Keeping track of the hottest minor leaguers in the Mets farm system.

Hitter of the Week: Wuilmer Becerra hasn’t been playing in the field due to a sore throwing shoulder, but he’s been hitting nearly everyday as the team’s DH.
Starting Pitcher of the Week: Tyler Pill. Chris Flexen tossed his best start of the year last week, but he gets edged for the weekly award because Pill lasted one out longer, with one fewer run allowed, and better whiff numbers.
Relief Pitcher of the Week: Akeel Morris was dominant again last week, striking out 5 of 11 batters faced.
Team of the Week: The Binghamton Mets, who had their 6-game winning streak snapped Sunday afternoon.

Previous weeks: 4/7-4/17, 4/18-24
GIF’s of the week: 4/7-14, 4/15-21, 4/22-28

5-1 week

Pitchers

Sean Gilmartin - 5 IP, 2 H, 1 R (1 ER), 1 2B, 3 TB, 4 BB, 5 K (5 K/Sw), 5 GB: 1 FB: 4 LD: 1 PU, 82 Pitches (46 Strikes), 10 Swinging, 11 Called, 12.2% SwStr, 28.6% Whiff/Swing, 16.4 Pitches/IP, 20 BF
Gilmartin earned a rain-shortened complete game win on Thursday, and kept PCL batters guessing at his secondaries all April
Gabriel Ynoa - 6.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R (1 ER), 1 2B, 6 TB, 2 BB, 3 K (3 K/Sw), 8 GB: 4 FB: 5 LD: 2 PU, 91 Pitches (69 Strikes), 10 Swinging, 16 Called, 11% SwStr, 18.9% Whiff/Swing, 13.6 Pitches/IP, 27 BF
Ynoa is throwing a two seamer more often this year, and that pitch helped him lower his ERA to 1.48 last Tuesday

Paul Sewald - 4 IP, 4 H, 1 2B, 5 TB, 1 BB, 5 K (4 K/Sw), 6 GB: 3 FB: 1 LD: 1 PU, 71 Pitches (47 Strikes), 10 Swinging, 14 Called, 14.1% SwStr, 30.3% Whiff/Swing, 17.8 Pitches/IP, 17 BF
Sewald keeps putting up big numbers out of the pen for Mets affiliates, and his slider has looked nasty this year
Josh Smoker - 2 IP, 1 H, 1 2B, 2 TB, 1 BB, 3 K (1 K/Sw), 3 GB: 1 LD, 33 Pitches (22 Strikes), 7 Swinging, 7 Called, 21.2% SwStr, 46.7% Whiff/Swing, 16.5 Pitches/IP, 8 BF
Chasen Bradford - 2 IP, 2 H, 1 2B, 3 TB, 1 K, 4 GB: 1 FB: 1 LD: 1 PU, 31 Pitches (25 Strikes), 4 Swinging, 4 Called, 12.9% SwStr, 19% Whiff/Swing, 15.5 Pitches/IP, 8 BF
Bradford’s command was great in April, and he had a very effective month out of the 51s pen, though his strikeout rate dropped to just 13.7%
Erik Goeddel - 1 IP, 1 H, 1 TB, 1 BB, 2 K (2 K/Sw), 1 GB: 1 FB, 23 Pitches (12 Strikes), 5 Swinging, 1 Called, 21.7% SwStr, 45.5% Whiff/Swing, 23 Pitches/IP, 5 BF
Goeddel has struggled with command a little in the PCL air
Jeff Walters - 2.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R (1 ER), 3 TB, 2 BB, 2 K (0 K/Sw), 3 GB: 2 FB: 1 LD: 1 PU, 55 Pitches (31 Strikes), 3 Swinging, 7 Called, 5.5% SwStr, 12.5% Whiff/Swing, 23.6 Pitches/IP, 11 BF
Walters velocity has crept back up to 93-95 MPH this year

Batters

Marc Krauss - 20 PA, 0.529/0.600/1.000, 6 R, 2 2B, 2 HR, 8 RBI, 3 BB, 3 K, 9% SwStr, 22.6% Whiff/Swing, 3.9 Pitches/PA, 0.583 BABIP
Krauss had a couple of huge games for Las Vegas at the end of the week
Gavin Cecchini - 21 PA, 0.444/0.524/0.667, 4 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 3 BB, 1 K, 1 GIDP, 1.2% SwStr, 3.2% Whiff/Swing, 3.8 Pitches/PA, 0.438 BABIP
Cecchini’s bat finally seems to be breaking out, and he has an 11 K: 11 BB ratio for the season
T.J. Rivera - 25 PA, 0.360/0.360/0.680, 10 R, 2 2B, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 1 K, 1 SB, 4.9% SwStr, 9.1% Whiff/Swing, 3.3 Pitches/PA, 0.318 BABIP
Rivera made his first appearance in LF this week and is looking like a threat to Eric Campbell’s bench spot with the Mets
Brandon Nimmo - 23 PA, 0.429/0.478/0.524, 4 R, 2 2B, 5 RBI, 2 BB, 8 K, 1 CS, 9.1% SwStr, 21.1% Whiff/Swing, 3.8 Pitches/PA, 0.692 BABIP
Nimmo’s bat also finally broke out this week, but it sounded like he had a rough time in the big Las Vegas outfield
Travis Taijeron - 25 PA, 0.333/0.440/0.524, 6 R, 4 2B, 5 RBI, 4 BB, 8 K, 1 GIDP, 8.4% SwStr, 23.5% Whiff/Swing, 3.8 Pitches/PA, 0.538 BABIP
Right-handed Kirk Nieuwenhuis looks ready to start launching some homeruns
Johnny Monell - 19 PA, 0.353/0.421/0.529, 2 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 2 K, 4.8% SwStr, 11.5% Whiff/Swing, 3.3 Pitches/PA, 0.357 BABIP
Monell had done nothing at the plate before this week
Roger Bernadina - 14 PA, 0.385/0.429/0.462, 3 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 3 K, 9.6% SwStr, 21.7% Whiff/Swing, 3.7 Pitches/PA, 0.5 BABIP
Dilson Herrera - 10 PA, 0.3/0.3/0.5, 1 R, 2 2B, 4 K, 1 SB, 16.7% SwStr, 28% Whiff/Swing, 4.2 Pitches/PA, 0.5 BABIP
Is currently day-to-day with a sore back

5-1 week

Pitchers

Tyler Pill - 8 IP, 4 H, 1 2B, 5 TB, 1 BB, 7 K (5 K/Sw), 13 GB: 6 FB: 1 LD, 95 Pitches (66 Strikes), 11 Swinging, 23 Called, 11.6% SwStr, 25.6% Whiff/Swing, 11.9 Pitches/IP, 29 BF
Pill had one of his best starts ever in the minors this past week, and finished April strong after a forgettable first two starts
Andrew Barbosa - 7.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R (2 ER), 1 2B, 4 TB, 1 BB, 10 K (8 K/Sw), 6 GB: 4 FB: 1 LD: 4 PU, 100 Pitches (71 Strikes), 18 Swinging, 16 Called, 18% SwStr, 32.7% Whiff/Swing, 13.6 Pitches/IP, 26 BF
The 6’8” lefty doesn’t throw hard (maxes in the upper 80’s), but his secondaries are proving too good for this league, especially a weak lineup like Portland’s
Mickey Jannis - 6.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R (2 ER), 1 2B, 1 HR, 9 TB, 3 BB, 3 K (2 K/Sw), 10 GB: 6 FB: 4 LD: 1 PU, 82 Pitches (50 Strikes), 4 Swinging, 16 Called, 4.9% SwStr, 11.8% Whiff/Swing, 13 Pitches/IP, 27 BF
Over his last two starts, Jannis has shown that he can work through early command problems
Robert Gsellman - 11 IP, 8 H, 6 R (3 ER), 2 2B, 10 TB, 6 BB, 10 K (8 K/Sw), 20 GB: 5 FB: 5 LD: 1 PU, 195 Pitches (113 Strikes), 20 Swinging, 28 Called, 10.3% SwStr, 23.5% Whiff/Swing, 17.7 Pitches/IP, 49 BF
He’s been a little wild during a cold April, but his slider is coming along nicely
Rainy Lara - 7 IP, 1 H, 1 R (1 ER), 1 HR, 4 TB, 2 BB, 3 K (2 K/Sw), 6 GB: 8 FB: 2 LD: 4 PU, 87 Pitches (55 Strikes), 5 Swinging, 15 Called, 5.7% SwStr, 12.5% Whiff/Swing, 12.4 Pitches/IP, 25 BF

Impressive bounceback from a wild week
Kelly Secrest - 2.2 IP, 3 BB, 5 K (4 K/Sw), 1 GB: 3 FB, 59 Pitches (32 Strikes), 5 Swinging, 13 Called, 8.5% SwStr, 26.3% Whiff/Swing, 22.1 Pitches/IP, 12 BF
Beck Wheeler - 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R (1 ER), 1 HR, 5 TB, 1 BB, 5 K (4 K/Sw), 4 GB: 2 FB: 1 LD, 50 Pitches (31 Strikes), 10 Swinging, 13 Called, 20% SwStr, 55.6% Whiff/Swing, 16.7 Pitches/IP, 13 BF
I really like his curveball, which he claims helps him against lefties

Batters

Jared King - 15 PA, 0.467/0.467/0.600, 3 R, 2 2B, 1 RBI, 3 K, 2 SB, 8.9% SwStr, 17.2% Whiff/Swing, 3.7 Pitches/PA, 0.583 BABIP

Great week for the slugger, and he launched an 86 MPH fastball just beyond the wall in LF
Kyle Johnson - 14 PA, 0.250/0.571/0.250, 5 R, 1 RBI, 5 BB, 1 HBP, 3 K, 1 GIDP, 1 SB, 3.8% SwStr, 10% Whiff/Swing, 3.8 Pitches/PA, 0.4 BABIP

Chris Flexen - 7.2 IP, 6 H, 1 R (1 ER), 6 TB, 1 BB, 4 K (2 K/Sw), 12 GB: 6 FB: 2 LD: 2 PU, 99 Pitches (62 Strikes), 9 Swinging, 12 Called, 9.1% SwStr, 18% Whiff/Swing, 12.9 Pitches/IP, 29 BF
He’s allowed runs in only one inning during each of his four starts, and he was able to avoid a big inning during this start

Alberto Baldonado - 4 IP, 2 H, 2 TB, 3 BB, 1 K, 4 GB: 1 FB: 3 LD: 1 PU, 70 Pitches (41 Strikes), 7 Swinging, 12 Called, 10% SwStr, 24.1% Whiff/Swing, 17.5 Pitches/IP, 15 BF
Robert Coles - 2.2 IP, 4 H, 4 TB, 1 K, 7 GB: 1 FB: 3 LD, 43 Pitches (27 Strikes), 1 Swinging, 10 Called, 2.3% SwStr, 5.9% Whiff/Swing, 16.1 Pitches/IP, 12 BF

Batters

Wuilmer Becerra - 28 PA, 0.542/0.607/0.667, 3 R, 3 2B, 2 RBI, 4 BB, 3 K, 1 GIDP, 11.8% SwStr, 25.5% Whiff/Swing, 3.6 Pitches/PA, 0.619 BABIP
Hasn’t shown much power yet, but the hits just keep falling in for Becerra, and his K-rate is down early in 2016
Kevin Taylor - 24 PA, 0.364/0.417/0.591, 4 R, 2 2B, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 2 BB, 2 K, 2.9% SwStr, 7.9% Whiff/Swing, 4.4 Pitches/PA, 0.368 BABIP

Rosario had a huge April with St. Lucie and I really doubt he finishes May there
Champ Stuart - 15 PA, 0.231/0.333/0.462, 4 R, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 2 BB, 3 K, 1 SB, 11.6% SwStr, 29.6% Whiff/Swing, 4.6 Pitches/PA, 0.222 BABIP

3-3 week

Pitchers

P.J. Conlon - 7 IP, 7 H, 1 R (1 ER), 1 3B, 9 TB, 7 K (6 K/Sw), 13 GB: 4 FB: 2 LD: 1 PU, 93 Pitches (67 Strikes), 18 Swinging, 8 Called, 19.4% SwStr, 30.5% Whiff/Swing, 13.3 Pitches/IP, 27 BF
Conlon has gone deeper and picked up more K’s with each start, and the crafty lefty looked too polished for the SAL in April
Chase Ingram - 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R (2 ER), 1 HR, 7 TB, 2 BB, 8 K (6 K/Sw), 7 GB: 3 FB: 1 LD: 1 PU, 86 Pitches (51 Strikes), 20 Swinging, 16 Called, 23.3% SwStr, 57.1% Whiff/Swing, 14.3 Pitches/IP, 22 BF
Ingram posted huge K and whiff numbers in April

Craig Missigman - 2 IP, 2 H, 1 2B, 3 TB, 1 BB, 2 K (1 K/Sw), 1 GB: 1 FB: 3 LD, 29 Pitches (22 Strikes), 3 Swinging, 6 Called, 10.3% SwStr, 18.8% Whiff/Swing, 14.5 Pitches/IP, 8 BF

Batters

J.C. Rodriguez - 23 PA, 0.368/0.478/0.632, 6 R, 2 2B, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 4 BB, 4 K, 2 SB, 2 CS, 9% SwStr, 22.6% Whiff/Swing, 3.4 Pitches/PA, 0.429 BABIP
Vinny Siena - 21 PA, 0.312/0.476/0.625, 5 R, 1 2B, 2 3B, 3 BB, 2 HBP, 8 K, 8.8% SwStr, 25% Whiff/Swing, 4.3 Pitches/PA, 0.625 BABIP
His on-base streak ended after 21 games to start the year, so now let’s see if he can keep it going in May
Ivan Wilson - 20 PA, 0.235/0.350/0.588, 4 R, 2 HR, 2 RBI, 3 BB, 8 K, 1 SB, 21.1% SwStr, 43.2% Whiff/Swing, 3.8 Pitches/PA, 0.286 BABIP
Struck out a lot this past week, but hit two deep bombs to LF
