Recapish
The
Columbia Fireflies took the opener in Rome behind a huge start from Andrew
Church and a 5-run 7th inning. Luis Ortega provided the big hit for
Columbia when he knocked a 3-run blast into the trees beyond LF.
Church
had excellent control of an electric fastball, which is enough to cruise in the
SAL. He threw more than 77% strikes against Rome, and his fastball was
consistently 92-94.
Rome
struck first with a run in the 2nd inning on a pair of doubles.
Justin Ellison hit a soft liner for a double that landed just fair down the RF
line with one out, and then Wigberto Nevarez doubled him home two batters
later. Nevarez’s double was just fair down the LF line, but unlike Ellison’s,
Wiggy’s had enough on it to roll into the corner.
Church
would scatter 5 hits over his final 5 innings, with only one baserunner
reaching second base during that span. Luke Dykstra and Austin Riley started
the 6th with back-to-back singles, but Church retired the next 3 in
quick and dominant fashion: lazy fly out, foul pop out, and the a strikeout of
Lucas Herbert.
After
Church kept Rome off the board in the 6th, his teammates picked him
up with 5 runs in the 7th. The Fireflies actually K’d three times in
the frame while sending all 9 batters to the plate. Mazeika picked up an RBI single
to knock out Rome’s starter, and then Ortega took Josh Graham deep to LF. After
the second out was recorded, Milton Ramos worked a walk, stole 2B, and then
scored on Dash Winningham’s 12th double of the year. Dash responded
nicely after being dropped to the 8-hole as he battles through a cold streak.
Church
was removed with a runner on 1B and two outs after striking out Riley in the 8th.
The way he was pitching, Church would’ve had a real chance to finish this game,
but it’s only his second official start of the year, and it’s likely he’s just
not stretched out enough for that yet. Craig Missigman took over for Church and
retired all 4 Rome batters he’d face.
Check
out highlights and an iscore log from this game below! I made it to State Mutual Park early Monday and have a lot of additional stuff I'd like to post (batting practices and much more on Church), but I haven't had the time to go through it all yet, so that will be a future post. This series continues
Tuesday night at 7 PM, with Kevin Canelon (3-3, 3.20 ERA) scheduled to pitch
opposite a top-Braves pitching prospect in Touki Toussaint (1-4, 6.39 ERA), who
the Fireflies have already beaten once this year.
MiLB.tv Scoring Highlights
Luis
Ortega lined a single into center field in the 5th and Milton Ramos
lined one into LF in the 6th.
Vinny
Siena sparked the 7th inning rally with a single knocked into CF.
Looking to at least advance Siena, Kevin Kaczmarski followed with a nice bunt
and avoided a tag on his way to 1B for a single. As mentioned, Mazeika picked
up an RBI single, Luis Ortega launched a 3R homer to LF, and Dash Winningham
capped the scoring with an RBI double to right center.
Dash
and Siena both added a single over the final two innings.
MiLB.tv Defensive Highlights
Vinny
Siena made a nice diving stop on a grounder to his left in the 9th.
