Recapish
The
Las Vegas 51s series against the Nashville Sounds is finally over, but not
before the Sounds got one last whooping in. These two teams played a close 3-1
affair through 4 innings, but then Nashville erupted against Seth Lugo in the 5th
and Jeff Walters in the 7th to make this game a laugher.
Just
before the first pitch was thrown, 51s announcer Russ Langer said, “Seth Lugo
has been like a stock market chart this year. You know, up-and-down,
up-and-down.” While he was referring to how Lugo has performed throughout the
season, it would end up a good description of how Lugo performed in this start.
Lugo
struck out two while allowing a blast in the 1st inning. He added
another K in the 2nd, right after the Sounds picked up their second
blast of the night against him. He retired 5 straight after allowing a leadoff
single in the 3rd, but then a two out hit deflected off of Niuman
Romero’s glove and opened the door for a Sounds run in the 4th.
Nashville again added on with two outs in the 5th inning, this time
collecting 3 straight RBI doubles to open this game up at 7-1. With the bullpen
short-handed, manager Wally Backman rolled the dice on Lugo in the 6th,
and he responded with his only 1-2-3 frame of the night. It was a very nice 6th
for Lugo too, as he added two more K’s and induced a groundout to Krauss.
Other
than Johnny Monell, the 51s offered their starter little support in this one,
although they technically hit for a team cycle, so there’s that. Monell went
deep in the 4th, and then tripled and scored in the 6th,
which accounted for half of the teams’ hits. T.J. Rivera doubled high off the
right field wall in his first AB, which extended his hitting streak to 13
games. Travis Taijeron’s hit also went off the wall, but he hit it so hard that
left fielder Max Muncy was able to get it into the infield in time to catch
Taijeron stuck between 1B and 2B.
The
51s needed Jeff Walters to give them some length in the 7th but he
just didn’t have it. Walters would only pick up one out in the frame, and the 4
ER allowed lifted his season ERA to 8.27. Erik Goeddel came in and struck out
the final two batters of the frame, but not before allowing an inherited runner
to score.
Not
wanting to waste his pen any further on such a lost cause, manager Wally
Backman turned to backup catcher Jeff Glenn for the 9th. Glenn had
only made one previous appearance this year, as a pinch hitter, and had 0
previous pro appearances as a pitcher. He limited the damage to just one run,
which was aided by a 5-4-3 double play to end the frame.
With
the Sounds finally leaving, the 51s look to change the tune this weekend
against the Memphis Red Birds, who come in at 19-25. Duane Below (3-2, 4.32
ERA) is scheduled to make the 10:05 PM start in Friday night’s opener, and
he’ll be pitching opposite top Cards pitching prospect Alex Reyes. Both
pitchers are lefties, but Reyes will be throwing a changeup at a velocity close
to Below’s fastball.
