2016 Monday Morning Mets Minors Players of the Week

May 2-8, 2016

Keeping track of the hottest minor leaguers in the Mets farm system.

Hitter of the Week: Dilson Herrera has been locked in since rejoining the lineup this past week. He had been out for a few games dealing with a sore back.
Starting Pitcher of the Week: Gabriel Ynoa had two more effective starts for Las Vegas this past week, and still maintains an ERA below 2 in his PCL debut.
Relief Pitcher of the Week: Logan Taylor’s walk rate has been a little bit high out of the B-Mets pen to date, but his stuff has looked very nice – 90-96 with various fastballs, and still showing a solid curve.
Team of the Week: The Las Vegas 51s were the only team with a positive record this past week and the top prospects with the club stood out.

Previous weeks: 4/7-4/17, 4/18-24, 4/25-5/1

4-3 week

Pitchers

Gabriel Ynoa - 13.1 IP, 11 H, 4 R (4 ER), 1 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 17 TB, 2 BB, 7 K (5 K/Sw), 17 GB: 14 FB: 7 LD: 3 PU, 180 Pitches (117 Strikes), 11 Swinging, 38 Called, 6.1% SwStr, 13.9% Whiff/Swing, 13.5 Pitches/IP, 51 BF
Ynoa has been using a two seamer with high frequency this year, but I’m seeing it reported in the upper 80’s instead of the low 90’s his fastball previously sat at (5/2, 5/7)

Josh Edgin - 3 IP, 1 BB, 3 K (1 K/Sw), 3 GB: 2 FB, 33 Pitches (23 Strikes), 6 Swinging, 4 Called, 18.2% SwStr, 31.6% Whiff/Swing, 11 Pitches/IP, 9 BF
Has topped out at 90 MPH with his fastball, but the slider has been very effective
Paul Sewald - 3 IP, 3 K (1 K/Sw), 3 GB: 2 FB: 1 PU, 27 Pitches (21 Strikes), 3 Swinging, 8 Called, 11.1% SwStr, 23.1% Whiff/Swing, 9 Pitches/IP, 9 BF
Slider looks great

Chasen Bradford - 2.2 IP, 6 H, 1 R (0 ER), 2 2B, 8 TB, 1 K (1 K/Sw), 7 GB: 2 FB: 3 LD: 1 PU, 43 Pitches (30 Strikes), 5 Swinging, 7 Called, 11.6% SwStr, 21.7% Whiff/Swing, 16.1 Pitches/IP, 15 BF

Don’t think I’ve seen him this hot since 2014 with Binghamton

Sat for both games over the weekend after committing two errors Friday night – not sure if they’re connected, but haven’t heard anything about an injury
T.J. Rivera - 30 PA, 0.385/0.433/0.654, 4 R, 1 2B, 2 HR, 8 RBI, 3 BB, 1 SF, 1 CS, 2.4% SwStr, 5.3% Whiff/Swing, 2.8 Pitches/PA, 0.32 BABIP
Not many cheap hits this year, and he has K’d only once since 4/19
Travis Taijeron - 26 PA, 0.304/0.385/0.609, 6 R, 1 2B, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 3 BB, 10 K, 15.1% SwStr, 37.2% Whiff/Swing, 4.1 Pitches/PA, 0.455 BABIP

Finally starting to break out and saw a ton of pitches last week

Gave up a homerun on a hanging slider, but went right back to it on the next pitch, and got it up to 88 MPH

Was striking out at a higher than expected rate earlier this year, but was a contact machine last week
Kyle Johnson - 28 PA, 0.348/0.464/0.435, 7 R, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 5 BB, 6 K, 1 SB, 2 CS, 8% SwStr, 18.8% Whiff/Swing, 4 Pitches/PA, 0.471 BABIP

He hasn’t had great fastball command this year, but he’s been controlling his curve nicely, and the overall package has been effective at the FSL level

Corey Taylor - 2 IP, 2 H, 2 TB, 1 K (1 K/Sw), 5 GB: 1 LD: 1 PU, 33 Pitches (20 Strikes), 3 Swinging, 4 Called, 9.1% SwStr, 18.8% Whiff/Swing, 16.5 Pitches/IP, 8 BF
The 2015 draft pick continues to have success wherever he pitches

Batters

Wuilmer Becerra - 23 PA, 0.524/0.565/0.619, 5 R, 2 2B, 4 RBI, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 18.5% SwStr, 30.6% Whiff/Swing, 3.5 Pitches/PA, 0.579 BABIP
He’s been a singles machine with few strikeouts the past few weeks, but as you can see, he had a low contact rate for the second straight week
Kevin Taylor - 23 PA, 0.429/0.478/0.571, 5 R, 3 2B, 2 RBI, 2 BB, 4 K, 6.2% SwStr, 14.6% Whiff/Swing, 4.2 Pitches/PA, 0.529 BABIP

Saw some comments critical of Rosario’s K: BB rates in April, then he goes out and posts a 1 K: 3 BB rate in the first week of May

3-3 week

Pitchers

Kevin Canelon - 5 IP, 1 H, 1 TB, 1 BB, 7 K (6 K/Sw), 2 GB: 6 FB: 1 PU, 92 Pitches (64 Strikes), 11 Swinging, 17 Called, 12% SwStr, 23.4% Whiff/Swing, 18.4 Pitches/IP, 17 BF
Given his below average fastball velocity, he’ll need to prove he can do this against tougher competition
Tyler Badamo - 4 IP, 2 H, 2 TB, 1 BB, 4 K (4 K/Sw), 8 GB: 1 FB, 51 Pitches (30 Strikes), 7 Swinging, 10 Called, 13.7% SwStr, 35% Whiff/Swing, 12.8 Pitches/IP, 14 BF
Was off to a great start against Greenville when a lights malfunction suspended Saturday’s game mid-5th
P.J. Conlon - 6.1 IP, 7 H, 2 R (2 ER), 1 2B, 8 TB, 2 BB, 5 K (4 K/Sw), 11 GB: 3 FB: 3 LD: 3 PU, 96 Pitches (61 Strikes), 9 Swinging, 18 Called, 9.4% SwStr, 20.9% Whiff/Swing, 15.2 Pitches/IP, 27 BF

Christian Montgomery - 2 IP, 3 H, 3 TB, 4 K (3 K/Sw), 1 GB: 2 FB: 1 LD: 1 PU, 37 Pitches (22 Strikes), 9 Swinging, 3 Called, 24.3% SwStr, 47.4% Whiff/Swing, 18.5 Pitches/IP, 9 BF

Batters

David Thompson - 25 PA, 0.364/0.44/0.591, 6 R, 2 2B, 1 HR, 8 RBI, 2 BB, 1 HBP, 2 K, 1 SB, 7.2% SwStr, 15.8% Whiff/Swing, 3.3 Pitches/PA, 0.368 BABIP
Thompson is ready to face tougher competition, and I wonder if the Mets execs have considered jumping him over St. Lucie, especially given the B-Mets current 3B options
Vinny Siena - 27 PA, 0.4/0.538/0.4, 6 R, 1 RBI, 3 BB, 3 HBP, 1 SAC, 3 K, 1 GIDP, 4% SwStr, 12.5% Whiff/Swing, 3.7 Pitches/PA, 0.471 BABIP
Siena is also ready to face tougher competition – the Greenville Drive announcer would see him promoted yesterday – and should have an opening with St. Lucie once Amed Rosario gets the promotion to Binghamton (and Luis Guillorme moves back to SS)
Dash Winningham - 15 PA, 0.357/0.333/0.5, 1 R, 2 2B, 5 RBI, 1 SF, 2 K, 2 GIDP, 3.7% SwStr, 9.5% Whiff/Swing, 3.6 Pitches/PA, 0.385 BABIP
He’s yet to show the HR power he showed with Kingsport – he tied for the league lead with 12 as a 19-year old – but he’s shown huge gains in contact rate this year
Ivan Wilson - 23 PA, 0.278/0.435/0.333, 2 R, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 5 BB, 6 K, 1 SB, 1 CS, 8.3% SwStr, 26.9% Whiff/Swing, 3.7 Pitches/PA, 0.417 BABIP
