Recapish
The
51s started their homestand with a win over El Paso Tuesday night behind a strong
start from Seth Lugo and a big 3rd inning. Brandon Nimmo and T.J.
Rivera continued their hot streaks with two hits apiece, but the big hits came
from the 4-5-6 batters Johnny Monell (HR), Travis Taijeron (wall triple), and
Roger Bernadina (wall double).
Lugo
was hit hard and knocked out before the 5th in two of his first
three starts this year, but he’s been much more reliable since skipping a start
near the end of April. He had three clean innings and was only forced to labor
in the 3rd inning, when he threw 21 pitches. It seemed like he was
focusing more on using his slider in this start, but he brought his curve out
over the final few innings, and it led to some nice sequences. Facing Hunter
Renfroe with a runner on 3B in the 6th, Lugo went 84 MPH Slider-92
MPH Fastball (4Seam likely)-77 MPH Curveball-87 MPH Fastball (2Seam likely),
which led to a pop out to 2B.
El
Paso wasted little time jumping ahead against Lugo in the 1st, but
Lugo did a good job to get out of the inning with only one run allowed. Manuel
Margot led off with a single and then Carlos Asuaje doubled him to 3B before
Lugo retired 3 in a row.
The
51s threatened to tie it up in the 1st, but red-hot Brandon Nimmo
was thrown out at the plate – including last night, Nimmo is slashing .360/.407/.520
over his last 54 PA. He hit a one out double in his first trip to the plate,
but was thrown out trying to score on a T.J. Rivera single.
Dilson
Herrera’s first error opened the door for a pair of El Paso runs in the 3rd.
He dropped a throw from Reynolds at 2B that would’ve at least been a force out.
The Chihuahuas later traded a run for a double play, which would’ve been an
inning ending double play if not for the error. They added another run on a
Renfroe double, but he was thrown out by Taijeron/Dilson at 3B to end the
inning – turnaround is fair play after he nailed Taijeron trying to extend a
double into a triple last week in El Paso.
Las
Vegas then exploded in the bottom of the frame. Nimmo and Rivera picked up
back-to-back RBI singles with one out, and then Taijeron and Bernadina went off
the wall for 3 more runs.
Lugo,
Zach Thornton, and Paul Sewald then went to work protecting that lead, allowing
just 4 singles over the final 6 innings. Check out some Lugo pitch log details
below courtesy of iscorecast. This series continues Wednesday night at 10:05
PM, with Duane Below (1-2, 6.04 ERA) scheduled to pitch opposite Jeremy Guthrie
(0-5, 8.40 ERA).
