Homeruns

            Dash Winningham hit his first homerun of the year Friday night in Columbia – hopefully that will open the floodgates for him some!

            The Swinging Samoan Stefan Sabol hit his first ever Double-A homerun for the B-Mets in game one Saturday afternoon.

            The B-Mets would add a pair of homeruns in game two Saturday:

Dominic Smith picked up his 4^th homerun of the year off ‘The Big Apple’ sign in CF.

Kyle Johnson hit a solo blast to CF in the 5^th inning.

             Dilson Herrera hit two more homeruns and is up to 8 on the season, all of which have come in May.

Defense

            Fireflies catcher Jose Garcia didn’t even bother to stand up for his throw to 2B Saturday night, yet it was on the money to easily catch the Tourist trying to steal a base.

            Sometimes players create their own great play thanks to an initial misread, but that doesn’t diminish the final outcome of the play. Jared King got spun around multiple times on this fly ball in game two Saturday, but he stuck with it and made the diving catch in RF.

            After a lot of strikeouts in his first week of Double-A action, Phillip Evans has been looking pretty good on both sides of the ball for the B-Mets. He’s been rotating through the infield spots, and made a nice play as a SS in game two Saturday.

            Victor Cruzado isn’t really known for his defense or arm, but he’s made good throws for 4 outfield assists thus far. He kept Casey Delgado’s shutout bid intact during the 4^th inning Sunday by throwing Cole Sturgeon out at home to end the frame.

            Jean Rodriguez (J.C.!!) offers the Fireflies good defense all around the infield, though he’s rarely had a chance to show off his shortstop skills playing behind Luis Guillorme and now Milton Ramos in the SAL.

            David Thompson has been making nice plays for the Fireflies at 3B all year long, and he’s made this section nearly every week.

            Danny Muno got the chance to play shortstop Tuesday and used it to show off his range at the position, making plays to his left and right.

            T.J. Rivera has been playing a lot of 1B so far in Las Vegas, but also used Tuesday to show off his range at another position, third base in T.J.’s case.

            L.J. Mazzilli isn’t known for having the most range on the infield, but he does have a strong arm, which helped him complete these two plays Thursday night.

Pitching (AKA Strikeouts!)

            Kevin Canelon picked up 12 K over 13 IP with only 3 ER allowed during the past week, but it was an 0-2 week for the lefty. He took the 3-2 loss against Asheville last Friday, and the 1-0 loss against Charleston Thursday night.

            With a Mets starter or two going through a dead arm phase, it would be nice if Rafael Montero could keep pitching like he has over his last 3 outings: 18 K: 7 BB over 16.2 IP with just 14 H and 4 R allowed. That line still managed to go 0-1 in two starts for Las Vegas this past week, as Montero lost a 1-0 pitcher’s duel with Julio Urias on Saturday and his bullpen blew Thursday’s lead.

            Fireflies starter Joe Shaw has shown good control and posted some big strikeout games this year, which has led to a 36 K: 8 BB rate through 33.2 IP. He doubled his walk output for the season with 4 Sunday, but he struck out 7 over a career-high 7 IP, all on his breaking ball.

            *PAGING P.J. CONLON, ST. LUCIE IS PAGING A P.J. CONLON, IS THERE A P.J. CONLON IN ST. LUCIE YET?*  Conlon has won 6 straight starts, pitched into the 7^th in 4 straight starts, and            has 36 K: 5 BB in his last 38.2 IP, with a .578 OPS allowed during that span. There is at least one St. Lucie rotation spot in jeopardy (Scarlyn Reyes) right now, and there’s not much need for him to keep dominating the SAL like this.
