Recapish
The
Binghamton Mets fell right back to 9 games under .500 with a 6-3 loss to the
Trenton Thunder Saturday night. Mickey Jannis had decent command of his stuff,
which helped him dominate 7 of the 9 Thunder batters, but the other two teed
off against him. Lefty Jordan Montgomery issued 3 walks and would be knocked
out before finishing 6 innings, but he allowed very little hard contact, and
the Thunder pen followed his lead. Rehabbing Wilmer Flores went 1-2 with a sac
fly while playing second base for 7 innings.
B-Mets
starter Mickey Jannis had good control after the 1st inning, but the
Thunder got to him for a pair of runs in that frame. Tyler Wade and Lane Adams
started their abuse of Jannis in the 1st with a single and double.
Those two were the only to pick up hits against Jannis on the night, and they
combined for a pair of doubles and a pair of triples.
The
umps made a terrible call before Jannis left in the 6th, and Manager
Pedro Lopez would get himself tossed on the play. With a runners on 2B and 3B with
0 outs, Mazzilli fielded a chopper near the 3B bag and immediately had that
runner caught in a rundown. Mazzilli chased the runner Lane Adams home before throwing
to catcher Xorge Carrillo as they neared home plate. Adams turned back towards
third base, but then went way out of the basepaths and dove into home plate,
where he was called safe. As you can see from the GIF below, Adams is pretty
clearly way out of the basepaths, but there is no instant replay in the minors
(thankfully). Pedro Lopez was PISSED and was shown alternating arguing with the
umps and waiting for an explanation of how the runner was safe. After he was
tossed, Pedro eventually re-enacted the play, which was awesome and led to the
crowd chanting his name.
Back
to the game, David Roseboom took over with 0 outs in the 6th and
did a great job to strand both inherited runners in scoring position. The
B-Mets would scratch out a run in the bottom of the 6th, but then managed
only one hit over the final 3 innings.
I
break down the scoring details with highlights below, so enjoy! This series
wraps up Sunday evening at 6:35 PM, with Tyler Pill (3-4, 4.18 ERA) scheduled
to make the birthday start for Binghamton.
MiLB.tv Scoring Highlights
L.J.
Mazzilli provided the only hit during the B-Mets 3rd inning rally
when he doubled Stefan Sabol to 3B with nobody out. The runs would come home on
an RBI groundout for Derrik Gibson and a sac fly from Wilmer Flores.
Flores
led off the 6th inning with a single flared into LF but would be
replaced on the basepaths on a fielder’s choice two batters later. Maikis De La
Cruz followed with a well-struck double to left field that knocked in Matt
Oberste and made it a 4-3 game.
Dominic
Smith added a single in the 8th.
