Recapish
The
Binghamton Mets received a third straight quality start from Tyler Pill
Wednesday evening as they won their 14th straight game in Portland.
The offense charged ahead with 6 runs between the 5th and 7th
innings, and then the rain started coming down too hard to play 10 pitches into
the bottom half of the 7th. After a short wait, the game was called
in Binghamton’s favor – the forecast was probably ugly, but I’m guessing
Thursday’s 11 AM scheduled start time played a role in the quick call too.
Before
the game, B-Mets announcer Tim Heiman posted this
interview with Mets minor league coordinator Ron Romanick. Romanick said
Pill had a fresh arm this Spring Training, and the team was hoping he could get
back to the form that he showed in 2014. Pill had a 3.28 ERA and 25% K-rate
with only 98 H and 27 BB in his final 115.1 IP that year, a span that included
his first Triple-A start. After allowing 9 R in his first 2 starts (9.2 IP),
Pill has allowed just 5 R over his last 3 starts (20 IP).
The
Sea Dogs jumped ahead with a run in the 2nd, though it could’ve been
more. Bryce Brentz led off the frame with a double to CF, and a Jake Romanski
single moved him to 3B to give Portland a great scoring opportunity. Pill
responded to the scoring threat nicely, inducing three groundouts to limit the
damage to one run.
Portland
made Pill work for 25 pitches in both the 4th and 5th
innings, but Pill limited the damage to one run in each frame. The B-Mets
couldn’t turn a potential double play grounder from Aneury Tavarez in the 4th
inning, which allowed a run to score. Henry Ramos doubled with two outs in the
5th to start a Portland rally. Wendell Rijo then reached on an
infield single after striking out in his first 2 AB’s against Pill. Cole
Sturgeon added the RBI single that put Portland back up 3-2 at the time.
I
recap the scoring details with highlights below, so enjoy! This series wraps up
Thursday morning at 11 AM, with Rainy Lara (2-2, 3.47 ERA) scheduled to pitch
for Binghamton. Lara is coming off a strong
start in New Hampshire, when Dominic Smith hit his second blast of the year,
and can push Binghamton to 4 games above .500 with a win.
Scoring Highlights
Kyle
Johnson (1st inning), Matt Oberste (3rd), and Dominic
Smith (4th) scattered singles over the first 4 innings, but
Binghamton could get nothing going.
L.J.
Mazzilli walked to leadoff the 5th inning, which spark the first of
3-straight two run rallies. Colton Plaia followed with a single to RF that
advanced Mazzilli a base. Mazzilli then came around on a pair of fielder’s
choices, with Johnson picking up the RBI. Maikis De La Cruz extended the inning
with a single, which advanced Johnson to 3B. Johnson’s good baserunning was
key, because he came home on a wild pitch during Niuman Romero’s AB.
Nik
Turley took over for Portland in the 6th and was wild out of the
gate. He walked Smith and Oberste, and issued two wild pitches during the first
3 AB’s of the inning. Victor Cruzado followed with an RBI infield single that
tied the game at 3. The B-Mets had the chance for a bigger inning, but had to
settle for just one more run in exchange of a GIDP off the bat of Plaia.
They
added some insurance runs in the top of the 7th, with a leadoff bunt single from Kyle Johnson getting things started. Johnson would move up on a
throwing error from the Portland catcher during Maikis’ AB, and then De La Cruz
brought him home with an RBI single to CF. Matt Oberste capped the day’s
scoring with an RBI double to LF.
Defensive Highlights
Check
out the focus from Tyler Pill on this comebacker – the bat goes farther than
the ball.
