Recapish
P.J.
Conlon’s dominance of the SAL continued Monday night against the Augusta Green
Jackets, and the Fireflies gave him just enough run support to get a 7th
straight win.
I’m not big on pitcher wins,
especially in the minors, but getting the W in 7 straight starts at the SAL level
suggests that a pitcher is both doing well and going deep. Conlon is doing more
than well, as his 1.06 ERA is top-10 in all of affiliated baseball, and he’s
averaged more than 6.1 IP per start. His primary weapon has been a devastating
changeup that plays well off his fastball and has consistently made SAL batters
look bad. He’ll also mix in a curve and slider, especially against lefties, but
he hardly needs them at this level.
The Fireflies built up a 2-0 lead
for Conlon over the first 4 innings (see details below), and that’s all he’d
need. Matt Winn took him deep to leadoff the 5th inning for the
Green Jackets only run. It was the first homerun Conlon has allowed as a pro in
now 68 IP (68 K: 8 BB, 51 H allowed). Augusta also got to Conlon for 4 doubles,
but he work around those hits, with Christian Montgomery helping him to strand
the runner in the 8th.
Monty picked up the K of Seth
Harrison to end the 8th inning, but then dug himself a hole in the 9th
inning. The first two Augusta batters reached against Monty to start the 9th,
with the second reaching on a walk. Walks have always been a problem for Monty,
but he was able to find his command and retire the next two batters on
groundouts, although the tying run did move up to 3B. With the lead on the
line, Monty battled with Kevin Beltre to a full count before blowing a 93 MPH
fastball by him to finish the game. Feeling pumped for the in, catcher Jose
Garcia jumped out of his stance and Christian Montgomery gave a triumphant fist
pump.
Enjoy the highlights and iscore log
below! This series continues Tuesday night at 7:05 PM, with no starter
announced yet for Columbia.
MiLB.tv Scoring Highlights
Vinny
Siena led off the Cola 1st with a single into LF, went to 2B on J.C.
Rodriguez’s single, and then scored on a throwing error by shortstop Lucius
Fox.
Jeff
Diehl laced this double to the right center field gap in the 2nd.
J.C.
led off the 4th with a double to RF, went to 3B on a wild pitch, and
then scored on a sac fly from Patrick Mazeika.
Luis
Ortega and Jeffrey Diehl had back-to-back hits with two outs in the 7th.
Ivan
Wilson added a two out single in the 8th inning.
MiLB.tv Defensive Highlights
The
shift was on against Augusta’s big lefty in the 1st, so 3B J.C.
Rodriguez was in the shortstop position to make this great diving play.
The
Fireflies turned this 6-4-3 double play to end the 5th. Luis Ortega handling his first grounder of the season at 1B is also shown.
