Recapish
The
Columbia Fireflies and Asheville Tourists were locked in a pitcher’s duel
Thursday night until the Tourists managed to put a crooked number up on the
board in the 8th.
Fireflies
starter Thomas McIlraith cruised through the first 7 innings but was hurt after
allowing a leadoff walk in the 8th. The Tourists used a sac bunt to
move Max George into scoring position, and then knocked McIlraith out of the
game with consecutive doubles down the LF line. Fireflies Manager Jose Leger
came out to argue that the first double was actually a foul ball, which
could’ve been huge, but there are no replay reviews in the minors. McIlraith used
all 4 of his pitches in this start, but was mostly fastball-slider, and
generally attacked the bottom of the zone looking for quick contact.
Craig
Missigman took over in the 8th and would allow an RBI double to
Brian Mundell before finishing the frame with a strikeout. He worked around
some trouble in the 9th to keep the Tourists off the scoreboard, but
the Fireflies had no comeback magic in them on this night.
I
review the offensive and defensive highlights from below, and have a full
iscorecast pitch log for McIlraith with some pitching highlights, so enjoy!
This series continues Friday night at 7:05 PM, with Kevin Canelon (2-1, 3.12
ERA) scheduled to pitch for the Fireflies.
Scoring Highlights
Kevin
Kaczmarski led off the 1st inning with a double to LF but was
stranded at 3B in the inning.
The
Fireflies tied the game in the 6th without the benefit of an RBI
hit. Kacz led off with a walk and went to 2B on J.C. Rodriguez’ single. They
both moved up on a sac bunt from Vinny Siena, which allowed Kacz to come home
on a passed ball.
Tyler
Moore and Milton Ramos hit a pair of two out singles in the 7th
inning that led to nothing.
David
Thompson picked up a two out single in the 8th inning but was
stranded at 2B.
Defensive Highlights
Thomas
McIlraith is quick to pounce off the mound and field a nice bunt attempt
leading off the 2nd inning.
Here’s
David Thompson ranging to his left for a grounder in the 3rd.
The
Fireflies turned a 6-4-3 double play behind McIlraith to end the 4th
inning.
McIlraith
showed that same quickness to get to another bunt attempt in the 5th
inning.
Ivan Wilson made another great diving catch behind McIlraith in center field in the sixth inning - he also made a special catch behind him during the nono.
Milton Ramos handled this slow grounder nicely in the 9th.
Milton Ramos handled this slow grounder nicely in the 9th.
