Recapish

Joe Shaw’s promising start to the 2016 season continued in Charleston Saturday night as he reached double-digit strikeouts for the first time as a pro. Fortunately for Shaw, his teammates chose this game to break out offensively after a quiet week, and the two sides combined to give Columbia and 8-4 win. Ivan Wilson hit a monster shot down the LF line that everyone in the park seemed to see as a foul ball except for the umpires.
Shaw has been extremely sharp this year, and this start pushes him to 46 K: 8 BB over 40.2 IP, with half of those walks coming in his last start. His fastball-breaking ball combo allowed him to plow through the River Dogs lineup, although Charleston managed to scratch out a run in each of the 4th and 5th innings. Jhalan Jackson ended Shaw’s shutout bid in the 4th inning when he ripped a double into LF, and that was really the only hard contact off him in the game.
Nicco Blank took over for Shaw in the 8th inning and found himself in trouble after issuing a leadoff walk. Connor Spencer and Kendall Coleman came through with RBI hits off Blank in the frame before he left. With the game getting close, Manager Jose Leger went to Johnny Magliozzi for the final 4 outs of the game. Mags escaped the 8th inning jam and was then helped out by a nicely turned 5-4-3 double play to end the game in the 9th.
I break down the Fireflies scoring details with highlights below, so enjoy! This series continues Sunday evening at 5:05 PM, with Chase Ingram (3-2, 3.00 ERA) scheduled to pitch for Cola coming off another strong start.

MiLB.tv Scoring Highlights

With one out in the 1st inning, Vinny Siena singled through the left side of the infield, and then J.C. Rodriguez doubled him to 3B. Siena would score the first run of the game on a wild pitch, and then Milton Ramos knocked in J.C. with a bunt single.

Patrick Mazeika led off the 3rd inning with a single lined into CF and then scored on Ivan Wilson’s 4th homerun of the year.

Cola added two more runs in the 4th thanks to 4 straight singles – Kevin Kaczmarski, Siena, Rodriguez, and Mazeika – and a sac fly from Milton Ramos.

Kacz led off the 6th with a single and the River Dogs let him have 3B: he moved up to 2B on a balk and to 3B on a wild pitch. The Fireflies capped their scoring for the game with a pair of RBI doubles in the frame, first Rodriguez and then Ramos.

Siena, Rodriguez, and Mazeika all added singles to laod the bases with one out in the 8th, but the Fireflies would not get a run home in the frame.

MiLB.tv Defensive Highlights

J.C. Rodriguez made a nice play in the 3rd inning and then started the game ending double play in the 9th inning.

Dash Winningham had to range to his right for this grounder in the 7th.
