Recapish

The Fightin’s finished off an overwhelming sweep of the B-Mets Wednesday afternoon in Reading. They jumped out to a big lead early and held on when the game got tight late.
B-Mets starter Mickey Jannis issued multiple walks for a fifth straight start, and reached 4 BB for the third time in his first six starts of 2016. It was only the third time he’s finished 5 innings, though that 5th inning was what really hurt the B-Mets. Reading has one of the top lineups in the EL, but the B-Mets need more from Jannis moving forward.
Reading jumped ahead 1-0 in the 3rd without the aid of a hit. Jannis loaded the bases on a walk and 2 HBP, and Jorge Alfaro came through with a sac fly.
After the B-Mets tied the game in their half of the 4th inning, Reading took control of the game with 6 runs between the 4th and 5th innings. Jannis issued three walks during the stretch (one intentional), uncorked a wild pitch, and threw a knuckler that went for a passed ball against Colton Plaia.
Trailing 7-1 entering the 8th, the B-Mets charged back with a 5-run inning on the back of Matt Oberste’s grand slam. They were threatening for more when Derrik Gibson was called out on a check swing strike 3 offered at a wild pitch. Stefan Sabol came home on the wild pitch while Gibson stood there confused about the call. It would’ve been the tying run, but Reading finished the strikeout at 1B to end the inning and negate the run.
The B-Mets took a 10-hour trip to Portland after the game for a 5-game series with the Sea Dogs. The series starts Thursday on 6 PM, with Robert Gsellman scheduled to pitch for Binghamton.

Scoring Highlights

Colton Plaia picked up his second double of the year with two outs in the 2nd inning.

Maikis De La Cruz led off the 4th inning with a double and then came around to score the B-Mets first run of the game on a groundout from Niuman Romero.

The first 7 B-Mets reached base in the 8th, but only one picked up an RBI hit. Derrik Gibson, Maikis, and Romero all singled to load the bases for Matt Oberste, who hit his third grand slam as a pro to make the game interesting again. Dominic Smith added a sac fly for the fifth run of the inning.
