Recapish
The
Binghamton Mets slide continued in painful fashion Wednesday night, as they
were again blown out by a team that came into this series 18 games under .500. The
bats showed some signs of life again, but they did nothing once they got
runners into scoring position. Rehabbing Wilmer Flores went 0-5 from the
leadoff spot while playing 1B for all 9 innings.
Rainy
Lara had a dominant 1st inning but then struggled over his final 3
frames. Not a good sign that his manager didn’t have the confidence to send him
out for a 5th inning with only 64 pitches, and I wonder if the move
to the pen is coming soon.
A
fielding error by Mazzilli opened the door for a 2nd inning Richmond
run, which was knocked in by Randy Moreno. Austin Slater took Lara deep to make
it 3-0 in the 3rd, and that was all the Squirrels would need.
The
B-Mets would scratch out a run in the 4th inning, so this game
stayed within reach at 4-1 before Tim Peterson came in. Peterson was having a
ridiculous season for St. Lucie, but he was smacked around in the 7th
and 8th before his manager came to get him. It actually wasn’t
Peterson’s Double-A debut – that came on the last day of the 2014 regular
season – though the results weren’t much better.
After
missing 9 days and not doing much in his first game back Tuesday, Phillip Evans
had another big night. He’s at .433/.433/.533 over his last 11 games (30 PA),
and half of his 4 strikeouts during the stretch came Tuesday – he struck out 7
times in his first 14 PA’s with Binghamton.
I
break down the scoring details and more with highlights below, so enjoy! This
series wraps up Thursday morning at 10:30 AM, with Robert Gsellman (1-3, 2.56
ERA) scheduled to pitch for Binghamton.
MiLB.tv Scoring Highlights
Victor
Cruzado singled in the 1st inning and doubled in the 5th
inning.
Matt
Oberste singled to start the 2nd inning, but he was caught trying to
steal 2B shortly before Jared King lined a double into the left center field
gap. The cameras didn’t show King hitting (they were focused on the pitcher),
but they did show the ball bouncing to the wall.
King
walked and came around to score the B-Mets first run of the game in the 4th
inning. L.J. Mazzilli and Phillip Evans followed with singles to bring him
around.
Mazzilli
and Evans also picked up consecutive singles in the 6th inning, but
they came with two outs and nobody on base.
Evans
led off the 9th with his third single of the game, went to 3B on
Stefan Sabol’s third double of the year, and then scored on Cruzado’s third hit
of the night.
MiLB.tv Defensive Highlights
Wilmer
Flores coverage: It didn’t matter since I don’t think Rainy Lara made it to 1B
to cover the bag, but you want the righty first baseman to spin the other
direction for the throw to 2B because it’s a quicker pivot.
Matt
Oberste made a wide throw after fielding this sac bunt in the 4th
but Wilmer does a nice job stretching for the out. Wilmer also handled a hot shot hit way in the 5th and then made the stretch to complete the 8-3 double play later in the frame.
There
was a lot to distract Phil Evans as he fielded this slow grounder in the 8th,
but he stuck with it and made the strong throw to 1B in plenty of time.
