Recapish
The
Las Vegas 51s finished their road trip in victorious fashion Sunday afternoon
thanks to a pair of two run doubles from Brandon Nimmo and some fine pitching
out of the pen. The 51s jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 1st inning,
and then Nimmo hit his doubles in the 5th and 6th
innings, extending the Las Vegas lead to 3 runs in both cases.
51s
starter Duane Below was smacked around a little by the Sky Sox, allowing 11
hits over his 5.1 IP, but he left with his team up 6-3. He had no clean
innings, though he was helped out by a double play in the 1st to
face the minimum in that frame. Despite the high hit count, Below had allowed
just 1 run until Michael Reed took him deep with two outs in the 5th
inning.
With
Below passed 100 pitches for the first time in 2016, Zack Thornton was called
upon to finish the 6th. The pen held the 3-run lead until the 9th,
when Erik Goeddel was asked to go a 2nd inning. Garin Cecchini started
the frame with a double off of Goeddel and eventually scored to make it a 6-4
game. With Goeddel struggling, Wally chose to make this a save by committee. He
brought in Josh Edgin for the lefty, who went down swinging, and then Chase
Bradford for the righty Will Middlebrooks, who took his fourth K of the game.
The
51s took a bus to Las Vegas after the game where they begin an 8-game home stand
against the Nashville Sounds. Gabriel Ynoa (5-0, 2.09 ERA) is scheduled to
pitch for Las Vegas in the opener, which begins at 10:05 PM Monday night.
MiLB.tv Scoring Highlights
The
51s struck for 2 runs with 2 outs in the 1st inning. T.J. Rivera
(who else) started the rally by reaching on an infield single and then came
around to score on Johnny Monell’s 8th double of the year. Travis
Taijeron doubled the lead with a single into LF. (Archive didn’t show the top
half of the 1st)
Brandon
Nimmo’s big day started with a single in the 3rd. (Had a terrible
angle, but he pulled it sharply through the right side of the infield).
In
his next AB, Nimmo would double in two runs to give Las Vegas a 4-1 lead
through 4.5 innings.
And
he did the same thing in his next AB, which came in the next inning, and right
after the Sky Sox had made it a one run game again.
