Recapish
The
Columbia Fireflies fell behind big early Wednesday afternoon and couldn’t
complete the comeback, dropping the rubber match with Rome 8-5.
Cola
starter Thomas McIlraith had a strong 1st inning, but then Rome
strung together 7 hits for 6 runs in the 2nd. There were 5 singles
bookended by a pair of doubles, and 4 of the hits came on groundballs. Craig
Missigman came in with two runners in scoring position and cleaned up the mess,
but the damage had already been done. Missigman did a great job over nearly 4
innings of shutout relief, picking up 3 K’s along the way.
The
Fireflies quickly went to work on chipping away at the lead, showing signs that
the offense was breaking out of its recent mini-slump, but the deficit was just
too much to overcome. I break down the offensive details with highlights below, so enjoy!
After
the game, Columbia prepared to travel across state to face the Charleston River
Dogs this weekend. The series begins Thursday night at 7:05 PM, with Kevin
Canelon (2-2, 3.27 ERA) scheduled to pitch for the Fireflies. Let’s Glow!
Notes: J.C. Rodriguez had to leave for a pinch runner after not scoring on the David Thompson double, but the game had no announcers and did not show the play, so not sure what's up. Hopefully he's OK though.

MiLB.tv Scoring Highlights
David
Thompson started his day with a two out single in the 1st inning.
Vicente
Lupo led off the 3rd inning with a single through the left side and
eventually came around to score the Fireflies first run. Lupo went to 2B on
Kevin Kaczmarski’s first hit of the game, to 3B on a fielder’s choice groundout
by J.C. Rodriguez, and then scored on David Thompson’s 14th double
of the year.
Patrick
Mazeika walked and then scored on Milton Ramos’ 5th double of the
year in the 4th inning. Ramos would be called out at 3B, but he appears to be safe.
Joe
Tuschak singled and then scored on Kaczmarski’s 6th double of the
year in the 6th inning.
Jeff
Diehl picked up his single with two outs in the 7th inning.
Lupo
doubled Ramos home in the 8th inning, and then a David Thompson sac
fly made this an 8-5 game.
Patrick
Mazeika lined a single into RF with one out in the 9th inning.
MiLB.tv Defensive Highlights
Some
nice plays from around the infield: Milton Ramos in the 3rd, a
double play in the 4th, David Thompson in the 6th and 9th,
and then Vinny Siena with the play of the day in the 9th.
