Recapish

The Columbia Fireflies evened up their series with the Rome Braves Tuesday night on the shoulders of another great P.J. Conlon start. Conlon lowered his ERA to a ridiculous 1.04 (2nd best in the SAL), but still looked frustrated to be coming out one out shy of 7 innings for the second straight outing. Tyler Bashlor and Alex Palsha came in and escaped bases loaded jams in the 7th and 8th inning before Palsha closed the game out with a perfect 9th.
Conlon has done nothing but deal since the Mets selected him in the 13th round last year, with a 0.75 ERA in his first 60.1 IP, a 61 K: 8 BB ratio, and only 45 H allowed (0 HR). He’s been very efficient this year, which has allowed him to average more than 6 IP per start, so I wonder if the Mets will hold him to 5 innings for a few starts or just skip his spot at some point to limit the innings total.
He started the night by retiring the first 9 Rome batters in a row, and then would only allowed baserunner’s in the 4th and 7th innings. Manager Jose Leger came to get him after he issued a two out walk that loaded the bases in the 7th – his second walk of the inning – though you could tell he wanted that last out. After getting the ball back from his catcher, Conlon quickly stepped up to the rubber as if to attack the next batter before his manager came out to get him.
I break down the Fireflies scoring details from the 6th inning with highlights below, and there are plenty of defense + pitching highlights too, so enjoy! This series wraps up with a morning affair beginning at 11:05 AM Wednesday. Thomas McIlraith (1-3, 4.86 ERA) is scheduled to pitch for Columbia coming off his longest outing of the year, and looking to give the Fireflies a series win.

Scoring Highlights

Jose Garcia sparked the Fireflies rally with a leadoff single in the 6th inning. Vicente Lupo followed with a hit of his own, which prompted Jose Leger to call for a sac bunt from Vinny Siena. With both runners now in scoring position, a weak dribbler off the bat of J.C. Rodriguez was able to bring home the games first run. David Thompson and Dash Winningham then extended the lead to 3-0 with consecutive RBI extra base hits. (Contact on the Dash double not shown, but he hit it into the LF corner).

Defensive Highlights

The infield was kept busy Tuesday night, so here are some plays from around the diamond – P.J. Conlon in the 4th, Dash Winningham in the 6th, J.C. Rodriguez in the 2nd, and David Thompson in the 9th.

Tyler Bashlor came into a bases loaded situation in the 7th and struck out Bradley Keller to keep Cola ahead 3-0.
