The SAL version of the Mets-Yankees rivalry continued Thursday night with a fantastic duel of two soft-tossing lefties, but the Fireflies would end up on the wrong side of a 1-0 game. After an 11-hit outburst Wednesday, the offense returned to its recent dormant state against the River Dogs.

Columbia starter Kevin Canelon tossed one of his best starts of the year, but his biggest mistake ended up costing the game. Kyle Holder crushed a leadoff double off the center field warning track in the 5^th inning, and then came around to score on Leonardo Molina’s RBI single. Canelon had cruised the order the 1^st time through, setting down 9 River Dogs batters in a row.

River Dogs starter Nestor Cortes started the season in extended spring training, but he’s emerging as an interesting arm on the staff. He didn’t throw hard (announcer said he topped around 90 MPH), but he had good control of his 4-pitch mix, and that’s enough in the SAL.

After being held hitless over the first 5 innings, Cola put together a scoring threat against Cortes in the 6^th, and they were starting to square him up nicely in the frame. David Thompson came up with two on and two out in the inning and gave one a ride to LF. Unfortunately there was enough ballpark to contain it, and the Fireflies couldn’t get any runs home.

There wasn’t much offense, but there are still some highlights below, so enjoy! This series continues Friday night at 7:05 PM, with Tyler Badamo (1-3, 3.79 ERA) scheduled to pitch for Cola.
