Recapish
Led
by Dominic Smith on offense, the Binghamton Mets won their opener with Akron
Friday night in a game shortened by rain. Smith picked up 3 hits in the game,
and the B-Mets scored a run in each inning he had one – he scored one and drove
in Kyle Johnson twice. Starter Mickey Jannis was wild, but he kept things close
enough over 4 innings, and then Logan Taylor was great for 3 before the rain
came.
Jannis threw only 50% strikes,
which led to 5 walks, but his 6 K’s and high Whiff/Swing rate suggest the pitch
was tough to hit when in the zone. It was his first time working with Raywilly
Gomez, and obviously catchers have trouble with knuckleballers at times – don’t
know why he’s not always with Colton Plaia or Xorge Carrillo, who are both
known for defense.
Akron scored first with a run in
the 2nd. Bryson Myles led off with a double and came around to score
on a groundout. The B-Mets were quick to jump ahead in the bottom of the 2nd,
but Myles would change that his next time up. He led off the 4th
with a solo blast to LF, and then Akron added another run to go up 3-2. Myles
stayed hot against Logan Taylor, picking up a two out double to RF in the 5th.
That was the only hit Taylor allowed, and he easily worked around both that hit
and a walk allowed thanks to his 5 strikeouts. Heard Taylor range from 91-95
during the relief appearance, and that’s multiple fastball types. Aside from
the high walk rate, Taylor has looked nice out of the B-Mets pen.
I break down the B-Mets scoring
details with highlights below, so enjoy. This series continues Saturday
afternoon at 1:05 PM with Robert Gsellman (1-1, 1.82 ERA) scheduled to pitch
for Binghamton.
Scoring Highlights
Dominic
Smith started his big night with a single in the 2nd inning. He
would advance to 2B on a wild pitch, and then came around to score on a two run
double off the bat of Raywilly Gomez.
Maikis
De La Cruz nearly went deep in the 4th, but settled for a double
lined off the LF wall.
Phillip
Evans sparked the 5th inning rally with a double to LF. Kyle Johnson
singled him home two batters later, and then scored from 1B on a Dom Smith
single into left center field. Matt Oberste followed Smith with another two out
single for Binghamton, but Clint Frazier threw Dom out at home to end the
inning.
Gomez
worked a two out walk in the 6th inning and eventually came around
to score. Evans would single him to 3B, and then Gomez scored on a wild pitch
to extend the B-Mets lead to 5-3.
The
B-Mets scratched out one more run before the rain took over in the bottom half
of the 7th. Johnson led off with a walk and Smith again knocked him
in, this time from 2B on a double into the LF corner.
Defensive Highlights
Dominic
Smith made a great stop on this grounder to his right in the 3rd inning.
