Recapish
Binghamton’s
6-game winning streak came to a halt Sunday afternoon, as the teams offense
went colder than the wet air outside. Robert Gsellman was touched up for 3
unearned runs in the 1st inning before settling in to retire the
final 10 batters he faced. The B-Mets bullpen held New Hampshire’s offense in
check over the final 4 innings, but the offense could never get anything going
on getaway day.
The
way his first pitch sailed outside, you could just tell Gsellman wasn’t
comfortable yet when he took the mound in the 1st. He was battling
the mound early, often scraping his foot against the dirt and rubber as he
tried to get set and get mud out of his cleats. Leadoff batter reached on a
fielding error from Phillip Evans, and that opened the door for New Hampshire’s
3-run frame. As much as he was struggling with his mechanics early, he would’ve
been on pace to get out of the inning unscored upon, but the fourth out proved
hard to get. Rowdy Tellez brought home Fields with a one out single, but then
Gsellman induced a pop out from K.C. Hobson for the second out of the inning.
Matt Dean followed with a fly ball into the right center field gap that fell in
just out of the reach of a diving Maikis De La Cruz and then rolled to the
warning track as Tellez came home. Jorge Saez added an RBI single and Gsellman
would issue his first walk in the frame before it finally ended. His final
pitch count after 1 inning was 36, and the B-Mets were trailing 3-0.
Aside
from the few offensive highlights from Binghamton, which I look at below, very
little else happened in this game. Gsellman ended up striking out 5 of the
final 10 batters he faced, and he had a 16% swinging strike rate over the final
4 innings, which is impressive, so check out his highlights at the bottom. The
B-Mets traveled to Portland after the game for their next series, which starts
Monday at 6:00 PM, with Andrew Barbosa scheduled to make the start.
Scoring Highlights
Xorge
Carrillo and Jared King hit back-to-back doubles leading off the 3rd
inning for the B-Mets only run of the game.
King
would pick up his second hit of the game, and sixth of the series in the 5th
inning, and L.J. Mazzilli added a single in the 6th.
Defensive Highlights
The
camera was too panned out for a good angle on most plays, but Phil Evans made
an error on the first play of the game, and then a nice fielding play on a
grounder to his right in the 3rd inning.
Robert
Gsellman did a nice job fielding a comebacker to start a 1-6-3 double play in
the 2nd inning.

After
battling through a 36-pitch 1st inning during which the Cats took a
3-0 lead, Gsellman settled in to give Binghamton 4 scoreless innings. He
allowed a pair of base runners in the 2nd inning, but then a
strikeout of Rowdy Tellez started a streak of 10 straight set down by Gsellman
before he exited.
Gsellman
K’d Matt Dean and Jorge Saez back-to-back in the 3rd inning.
He
then struck out Roemon Fields and Dwight Smith Jr. back-to-back in the 5th
inning.
