Recapish
J.C.
Rodriguez’s hot hitting at Spirit Communications Park continued Sunday
afternoon when he launched a walkoff triple off the top of the right center
field wall. The walkoff salvaged a win for the Fireflies in a series with
Asheville that saw the offense go quiet in big spots before J.C.’s hit.
Starter
Joe Shaw spent the game fooling Asheville batters with his curveball, and all 7
of his strikeouts came on whiffs at the breaking ball. It was mostly a strong
start from Shaw, but he did allow 4 walks (which doubled his season total) and
a solo blast to the Asheville shortstop.
The
Tourists didn’t pick up a hit until they were down 1-0 in the 5th,
but they jumped ahead 2-1 in the inning thanks to a pair of doubles. The Carlos
Herrera homerun in the 7th doubled the Tourists lead, and it seemed
like the Fireflies were going to waste a third straight 7-inning start in this
series.
But
it wouldn’t be a Fireflies game in 2016 without some late game magic, and this
time the Fireflies had it working for them. They tied the game up for the first
time with a pair of runs in the 8th, again with a run in the 9th,
and then J.C. Rodriguez ended it with a walkoff triple in the 9th.
I
take a closer look at the scoring details with highlights below, and include a
pitch log with highlights at the bottom, so enjoy! The Fireflies welcome the
Rome Braves into town for a series that begins Monday night at 7:05 PM. Chase
Ingram (3-2, 3.72 ERA) is scheduled to make the start for Columbia opposite highly
regarded Braves prospect Touki Toussaint.
Scoring Highlights
Kevin
Kaczmarski led off the 1st inning with his fourth double of the
year. He was robbed of a hit in his next PA.
David
Thompson doubled to start the 4th inning and then came around to
score on a bases loaded walk.
Milton
Ramos reached base in all 5 PA’s, which included this 6th inning
single.
Vinny
Siena picked up his hit with two outs in the 7th inning.
Ramos
picked up his next hit on a bunt to load the bases in the 8th. Ivan
Wilson followed with an RBI single hit into LF and the Fireflies would add a
second run in the frame on a bases loaded walk.
The
Fireflies picked up their third bases loaded run to tie the game in the 9th.
Jeffrey Diehl’s double was the only hit in the inning.
J.C.
Rodriguez hit a walkoff triple to CF in the 10th inning that brought
home Siena.
