Recapish
The
Fireflies dropped their second straight to Asheville 3-2 Friday night despite a
strong start from Kevin Canelon. Dash Winningham had a big game, which included
his first homerun of the year, but it was not enough for Columbia on this
night.
As
usual, Canelon’s command was excellent Friday night, and he attacked the bottom
of the zone with his mid-80’s heater and mid-70’s slider. He also mixed in his
upper-70’s changeup, but the other two pitches were his primary weapons.
The
Tourists jumped ahead with a run in each of the first two innings, and they had
the same recipe for both runs: leadoff double, runner advanced to 3B, sac fly
for the run. After the Fireflies missed a pair of opportunities to chip away at
the 2-0 lead, Asheville picked up the biggest run of the game in the 4th
inning. Brian Mundell reached on an infield single to start the frame, stole
2B, and scored on an RBI single off the bat of Yonathan Daza.
The
Fireflies had a few opportunities after Dash Winningham put Columbia on the
scoreboard with his Moon shot in the 4th inning, but they just
couldn’t come through with the big hit. I break down the offensive details with
highlights below, so enjoy! There’s also a Canelon pitch log with GIF’s
included at the bottom for your viewing pleasure. This series continues
Saturday night at 7:05 PM, with Tyler Badamo (1-2, 4.08 ERA) scheduled to pitch
for Columbia.

Scoring Highlights
David
Thompson and Dash Winningham picked up consecutive hits in the 2nd
inning, but Thompson was picked off of 1B before Winningham’s double (which
came against an 81 MPH Slider), so the Fireflies missed a chance to score.
Kevin
Kaczmarski had a pair of singles in this game: one in the 3rd and
another in the 5th.
Thompson
and Dash picked up consecutive hits again in the 4th inning, except
this time Thompson wasn’t picked off, and Dash left the yard for the first time
in 2016! His homerun came off an 87 MPH Fastball.
Vinny
Siena and J.C. Rodriguez added singles later in the game, but the Fireflies
couldn’t get either home.
Defensive Highlights
Milton
Ramos looking smooth on a grounder his way in the 9th.
