Recapish
The
Las Vegas 51s won a tight 1-0 affair with Sacramento Monday night behind Rafael
Montero’s best start in a long time. Wally Backman moved Matt Reynolds up to
the leadoff spot for this game ‘on a hunch’ (per Russ Langer), and the move
paid off with a win, as Reynolds doubled home the only run of the game in the 5th.
Montero’s
command wasn’t pinpoint throughout the entire start, but all three of his
pitches (fastball, changeup, slider) looked good and were very effective. The
only real trouble he faced came in the 3rd, when Gorkys Hernandez
reached 3B with one out, but he got the next two batters: pop out and
strikeout. He left after walking Mitch Delfino with two outs in the 6th
inning and a lefty due up.
Josh
Smoker came in for that lefty, and he needed just 3 pitches for the inning ending
K. Smoker was the first of four relievers who combined to keep Sacramento
scoreless over the final 3.1 IP. Josh Edgin started the 9th with two
K’s for Las Vegas, but Wally Backman then went to the righty Chase Bradford for
the final out when Mac Williamson was announced as a pinch hitter.
I
break down the scoring details with highlights below, so enjoy! It took Las Vegas
only 1 batter to pick up a hit against Chris Heston Monday night. The 51s left
for home after the game and will host El Paso Tuesday night. Seth Lugo (2-2,
8.61 ERA) is scheduled to make the 10:05 PM ET start for Las Vegas, and will be
looking to build on a pair of strong starts since returning from the DL.
Scoring Highlights
Ty
Kelly led off the 5th inning with a single and then scored the games
only run on Matt Reynolds fifth double of the year.
Brandon
Nimmo added an 8th inning infield single.
