Recapish

It took twelve innings, but the Rumble Ponies walked off on a walk to clinch their fifth straight series win Wednesday night against Erie. Rehabbing Tommy Milona made his third start since joining the Rumble Ponies and ran into the same problem that’s plagued him his whole career: homeruns. He gave up two and left down 3-0 in the 6th, but his teammates rallied to tie this game in the 9th and walkoff with a win in the 12th. Luis Guillorme, Matt Oberste, and David Thompson led the way offensively for Binghamton, plus Gustavo Nunez had the game tying hit and nearly connected on the walkoff hit in the 11th.
Milone allowed eight hits total, and five went for extra bases. Christin Stewart and A.J. Simcox took him deep for the three runs, but Gabriel Quintana kept the pressure on Milone with three doubles, the last of which knocked him out of the game.

Guillorme at second

The Ponies had only a few scoring chances against Erie starter A.J. Ladwig before finally breaking through in the 7th. Luis Guillorme wasted little time extending his on base streak to 29 games with a leadoff walk in the bottom of the 1st, but he was erased on the bases during a double play (K/CS). Matt Oberste led off the Bingo 2nd with a single and went to second on a walk, but then never advanced beyond that. David Thompson led off the 5th with a single, but he was also erased on the bases during a double play (643). Guillorme and Juan Lagares connected on back-to-back singles in the 6th, but another double play (643) ended that threat.

Corey Taylor took over for Milone with two outs in the 6th and stranded a runner on second base. He bailed his starter out of a tough situation and gave the Ponies 2.1 scoreless innings of relief, which kept the door open for a come back.

Thompson at third

The Ponies come back efforts started in the bottom of the 7th. Oberste worked a leadoff walk, went to second on a David Thompson single, to third on a Nunez single, and then came around to score with Thompson on a Patrick Biondi bunt single.

Guillorme led off the 8th with a single and Dale Burdick singled him up to second base two batters later, but then another double play (543) cut short a Ponies scoring opportunity.

With just under a month of regular season minor league action and P.J. Conlon quickly approaching his 2016 innings total, the Mets have decided to back off him for a start or two. He worked a scoreless frame out of the Ponies pen in the 9th, striking out two and needing just eleven pitches. Conlon is likely not a candidate for a September callup given the Mets 40-man roster crunch (a lot of guys will need Rule-V protection this winter and Conlon is not one of them), but the Ponies are on pace for some playoff action, and I’m sure Conlon would rather save his innings for those games.
Down 3-2 with one out in the bottom of the 9th, David Thompson came up and smacked his first triple of the year to center field. Nunez followed with an RBI double to bring him home and suddenly this game was going to extras.

Tim Peterson was huge for the Ponies in extras. He struck out four over two scoreless, limiting Erie to just one single while he was on the mound.
The Ponies had a chance to make Peterson a winner in the 11th, as Matt Oberste started the bottom half of the inning with his 23rd double of the season. Kevin Kaczmarski got Oberste to third with one out, but then Thompson was intentionally walked to get to the bottom of the order. Nunez flared one into left field that nearly fell in for a potential game winner, but Stewart made a very nice sliding catch at the last moment to rob him of the moment – unless the ball bounced away from Stewart, it would’ve been tough for Oberste to score on the play anyway, as he had to hold the bag at third.

Drew Smith kept the excellent pen work going with a scoreless 12th for Binghamton, which set him up to earn his second win in four appearances since the Mets traded Lucas Duda for him.
Luis Guillorme sparked the winning run with a one out single in the 12th. This was his fourth time on base Wednesday, but it was the only frame Guillorme reached that didn’t also have a Ponies double play. Guillorme went to second on a Champ Stuart single and then up to third on a fielder’s choice, which loaded the bases for Matt Oberste.
Oberste has probably been the Ponies most consistent hitter for several months at this point, and he’s been very hot the past two weeks (1.048 OPS over his last 52 PA), so he’s exactly who the Binghamton faithful in attendance wanted to see up in that spot. He’s also had a nice 2.5-point bump in his walk rate with the Ponies this year, and that added patience paid off in the 12th. Oberste worked a walk from Adam Ravenelle to bring home the game-winning run for Binghamton and send everyone home happy.

Looking ahead, the Ponies have a chance to sweep the Sea Wolves out of town behind Casey Delgado (8-5, 5.13 ERA) Thursday night, with game time scheduled for 6:35 PM.
