Recapish
It
took two days, but the Columbia Fireflies won in a blowout fashion to start
their series with Greenville over the weekend. Tyler Badamo was off to his best
start of the year on Saturday when a light malfunction forced the umps to
suspend the game before the bottom of the 5th started. The Fireflies
then came out ready to hit on Sunday, extending their lead from 5-0 to 13-3
over the 5th and 6th innings, and holding on for an easy
win.
Badamo
had good command of his fastball from the start, which helped him strike out or
induce a ground ball from 12 of the 14 batters to face him. Per the iscorecast
report shown below, he sat 88-91 with his fastball, and mixed in a curveball
and slider.
The
Drive managed to chip away at the 5-0 lead when the game resumed Sunday,
picking up a pair of runs off Johnny Magliozzi in the 5th. They scratched
out another run against Seth Davis in the 6th, but once the lead
ballooned to 10 runs, the game ended rather quickly.
I
break down the Fireflies scoring details with highlights below, so enjoy! The two
played a 7-inning game shortly after this one finished, with Joe Shaw starting
for Columbia.
Scoring Highlights
Vinny
Siena started his night with a single in the 1st inning.
Milton
Ramos doubled to deep CF in the 2nd inning, but would be thrown out
at 3B on a fielder’s choice.
Enmanuel
Zabala picked up a single into CF in the 3rd inning.
Siena
reached on a throwing error in the 4th inning and eventually came
around to score the Fireflies first run. David Thompson singled him to 2B, a
force out advanced him to 3B, and then he scored on a wild pitch with two outs.
Siena
added a single in the 5th inning, but Jeffrey Diehl provided the big
hit in the inning, launching a no-doubt grand slam to left center field.
Vicente
Lupo started the 6th inning rally with a single into CF. Joe Tuschak
and Siena singled to load the bases with 1 out, but Thompson couldn’t get a run
home. Fortunately Diehl walked to bring home Lupo, and then Ramos reached on an
infield single to bring home Tuschak.
Jose
Garcia sparked a huge 7th inning with a leadoff double to LF, his
first double of the year. After a pair of walks loaded the bases, J.C.
Rodriguez unloaded the bases with a triple to RF. Walks would reload the bases
for Ivan Wilson in the frame, and he singled home David Thompson to make it a
13-3 game.
Siena
added a fourth hit in the 8th, and Wilson his eighth double of the
year in the 9th.
Defensive Highlights
Milton
Ramos made some sparkling plays in this game but, as you may have noticed,
Fluor Field doesn’t have its best camera’s working for this series. They did
better during day 2, and I couldn’t help but laugh when Ramos made the
ridiculous spinning play in the 7th, because the announcer called it
a hit off the bat. Vinny Siena also made a nice play to end the 3rd inning.
