The NYPL All-Star rosters were announced Friday, and (as of now) the
Brooklyn Cyclones will be sending 3 players to the August 18th game,
as reported by Brooklyn
Baseball Banter.
The
Brooklyn Cyclones are in the NYPL playoffs hunt once again, sitting just a half
game back of the rival Staten Island Yankees in the McNamara division of the
NYPL, and a half game back of the Lowell Spinners for the one wild card spot.
The team has found success behind the top pitching staff in the league, which boasts
a team ERA of 2.93, while second place Hudson Valley is at 3.15. While the 2015
Cyclones lack the household name prospects that the 2014 Cyclones had (like
Michael Conforto, Amed Rosario, Marcos Molina, and Jhoan Urena), they still
have some interesting talent on the team, and three of those players were
rewarded for their strong starts with All-Star selections: Gaby Almonte, Alex Palsha, and Vinny Siena.
Gaby
Almonte will be 23 when the All-Star game takes place in two weeks, and he’s
been a prospect with the Mets system since 2011. He first came stateside in
2013, and has spent the past two seasons between the GCL and Kingsport. His
first start of the year was spoiled by one bad inning, but then he went on an
impressive run of 7 starts: 42.2 IP, 1.27 ERA, 36 H, 28 K: 8 BB, with a .567
OPS allowed. His run hit a huge roadblock in his most recent start, when he
allowed 9 ER over 3+ IP against Lowell.
Alex
Palsha was the Mets 27th round pick from 2014, and he’s yet to allow
a run this season as the Cyclones closer, with 10 saves during his 14
appearances. In total, he’s thrown 16.2 IP this year, with 7 hits allowed, 20
K: 4 BB (58 batters faced), and a .403 OPS allowed.
Vinny
Siena was the Mets 14th round pick from this season, and he got off
to a hot start with the Cyclones, hitting .352/.417/.380 over his first 28
games. He’s cooled off since then, going 11-55 with just 2 doubles over his
last 15 games, but he’s probably just wearing down some after a long Junior
season with UConn.
It’s
still possible that there are more Cyclones added to the team, so check back for
updates as the game draws closer.
