St. Lucie has been on fire since the promotion of Michael Conforto last week, and their 12 hit output Monday has them up to 45 hits in 35 innings since he left for Binghamton. The Mets threatened to score in the 2nd, as a ground-rule double from Doubles Smith Dom Smith put runners on 2B and 3B with nobody out, but a weird double play cut short the rally. Rosario hit a grounder towards 3B and Oberste initially broke on contact, but Matt realized he wasn’t going to make it home, so he tried to get back to 3B. Third baseman Niko Goodrum fielded the grounder near the bag, tagged Oberste, and threw on to 1B to complete the double play (info per listening to the radio, gameday has ‘Oberste out at home’). The Mets would add a pair of runs in the 3rd, as L.J. Mazzilli’s first hit of 2015 was a 2R-HR to deep CF – he hit a homerun in his first AB with St. Lucie in 2014. The game would stay 2-0 until the bottom of the 6th, as Logan Taylor churned out his best start since last August 14th. He had only two perfect innings (4th and 6th), but also allowed 2 runners to reach only once (2nd). He was a groundball machine, which is what I look for from Taylor, who uses his height and a nice overhand arm motion to generate a lot of natural sink on his pitches. The Mets extended their lead in the bottom of the 6th, and another double from Doubles Smith Dom Smith got the rally started – he has been hitting a lot of these doubles to LF, which is what he was doing during his best stretch with Savannah in 2014 too. Stefan Sabol provided the legs of the rally, singling home Smith, stealing 2B, and then scoring on a single from Plaia. They’d add one more run in the 7th, with Maikis singling home McNeil, who had led off with a triple. Mike Hepple allowed a pair of doubles in his 2-innings, but it was nice to see him pick up a pair of strikeouts in each inning too, ending the game with his 4th.

The Sand Gnats struggled to hit with RISP, going just 1-9 on
those situations as they lost the opener in Asheville. Things got a little wild
for starter Brad Wieck in the 3rd, which led to a big 3-run frame
for the Tourists. Wieck started the frame with his third straight strikeout,
but the next two batters singled to put runners on the corners. Then, with Josh
Fuentes, Nido would be charged with a passed ball that allowed a run to score,
and Wieck was charged with a wild pitch that let Hoelscher to advance to 3B.
Wieck would strikeout Fuentes, but walk Drew Weeks when he missed on a 3-2
count with two outs. The following batter, Max White, would battle Wieck to a
3-2 count too, but then hit the 7th pitch of the AB to CF for a 2R
triple. The Gnats started to claw their way back in the 4th, as
Eudor Garcia (RF corner) and Wuilmer Becerra (CF wall) hit back-to-back doubles
for a run. Patrick Biondi led off the 6th and used his legs to get
the Gnats another run: he singled into RF, stole 2B, went to 3B on a sac bunt,
and scored on a groundout. After retiring 8 straight, Wieck would face White
again with one out in the 6th, and again Max White burned Wieck for
extra bases, this time launching a solo blast to right-center field. The Gnats
would follow with a pitching change, but Darwin Frias allowed a blast to the next
Asheville batter. John Mora came home on a groundout in the 7th for
another Savannah run, but the Gnats couldn’t muster anything else, stranding
runners on the corners in the 8th. Tyler Moore left in the 1st, although it's not clear why.
Minors MVP of the Day
– L.J. Mazzili’s 2R-bomb put the St. Lucie Mets up 2-0, and they never looked
back after that, earning him the MVP in his first game of the season.

TJS.
