Recap
On
a beautiful (scorching) Wednesday afternoon in Las Vegas, Steven Matz and Tyler
DeLoach played a game of ‘who will blink first?’ with Matz and the 51s coming
out the winners. Matz didn’t have his best fastball command early in the
matinee start –there were a lot of close calls in Russ Langer’s opinion – but he
stuck with it, and started cruising as he found the zone more often. The 51s
offense finally broke through against DeLoach in the 6th, and the
insurance runs added in the 8th put this game practically out of
reach (it is still the PCL). Vic Black was in the booth with Langer for the
first 7 innings, offering some excellent insight, and making a very funny
pairing with Russ. Of note, Black mentioned early in the broadcast that he has
a slight tear in his groin, but said that he didn’t think it was more than a
sprain until they got the results back.
Matz
allowed a leadoff single in 3 of the first 4 innings, but then retired the
final 10 Bees batters he’d face in the game. He allowed two singles in the 4th,
which is when the Bees had their best chance to score against him. With one out
and Alex Yarbrough on 2B, C.J. Cron lined a single into RF, but Travis Taijeron
made a great throw to nail him at home (see below for the play at home) – his
streak started after the play at home. His 5th inning was ridiculous,
as he overmatched all three batters for 3 easy strikeouts.
T.J.
Rivera hit his sixth double in the past week to spark the 51s 6th inning
rally. Matt Reynolds followed with a booming triple to drive him home, and then
Alex Castellanos pulled a double down the line to bring home Reynolds. Two outs
later, Jayce Boyd singled home Castellanos for a 3-run inning.
Chase
Huchingson came in for the 8th and continued an impressive start to
his PCL career. He struggled some at times with Binghamton, but he picked up a
K and 2 groundouts around a walk in the frame.
Anthony
Recker hit his first bomb for the 51s in the 8th, lining a
no-doubter over the left-center field wall with Castellanos (walk) on 1B.
John
Church allowed a run on 3 singles in the 9th, but ended the threat
before things got too close.
Next
up, the 51s travel to Fresno to face a talented Grizzlies team, with
Tyler Pill scheduled to pitch in the opener at 10 PM. Rainy Lara is scheduled
to re-join the team and start Sunday.
