Recap
The
51s started hitting early against Salt Lake Tuesday night, and then they just
never stopped, getting multiple hits from 7 of 9 batters, including 3 doubles
from the suddenly red hot T.J. Rivera. Rainy Lara was promoted
for at least a spot start with Las Vegas, and he started out OK, but things got
progressively worse for him, culminating in a big 4-run 4th for Salt
Lake. He’d bounce back for his only 1-2-3 inning in the 5th, which
should help his confidence if he gets another PCL start. Cody Satterwhite and
Chase Bradford combined for 4 fantastic scoreless innings, allowing just 2 base
runners as the offense stormed ahead to a comfortable lead.
Lara
worked around a two out single in the 1st inning, sandwiching it
between a weak groundout to 1B and a pop out to Reynolds on the outfield grass.
Wilfredo
Tovar led off the bottom of the 1st with a single, but then got
picked off leaving for 2B too early – it was his third caught stealing in the
series. Two pitches later, Matt Reynolds hit a no-doubter to LF for a 1-0 Las
Vegas lead.
The
lead would not last long, however, as a leadoff single would come back to burn
Lara in the 2nd. Rainy struck out the second batter of the inning,
but Roger Kieschnick doubled to put runners on 2B and 3B with just one out. The
Bees would only get one run on a sac fly, but the game was now tied again.
Las
Vegas got right back to work in the bottom of the frame, taking the lead on a
two-run double from T.J. Rivera. The inning nearly ended on a double play one
batter too soon, but Cory Vaughn busted it down the line to beat out the relay
throw.
But
Lara was walking a fine line Tuesday night, and Salt Lake kept scratching away.
Gary Brown led off the 3r with a single, stole 2B and advanced to 3B on a throwing
error, and then scored on a sac fly. Lara started the 4th inning
with a strikeout, but then the next four Bees batters picked up hits off of
Lara for 3 runs: triple, double, single, triple. Brown hit the second triple,
and he’d score on a groundout to make it a 6-3 game. But, as mentioned, that
was the last time Salt Lake would score, and 3 runs is never safe in the PCL.
The
51s were quick to get some of those runs back in the bottom of the 4th,
scoring 2 runs on Travis Taijeron’s 12th bomb of the year (his 5th
in the past 9 games). They’d take the lead back with a big 7th, and another
T.J. Rivera double got the rally started. Tovar singled him home to tie the
game, and then he’d come around to score on a single off the bat of Johnny Monell.
With two outs in the inning, Kirk Nieuwenhuis provided the 51s with an
important insurance run, lining a double off the LF wall to bring home Monell.
The
series wraps up with a Wednesday matinee scheduled for 3 PM. Steven Matz will
take the mound looking to give Las Vegas a sweep and their 7th straight
victory.
