Recap
Luis
Cessa was on top of his game Sunday afternoon in Akron, and Gavin Cecchini
provided the jolt the B-Mets needed in the 5th, as Binghamton ended
a 4-game losing streak. Cessa was extremely sharp throughout the start, only
topping 15 pitches in an inning once, and needing only 4 pitches during a
perfect 5th, shutting the Rubber Ducks down after being given a
lead. Cessa likely could’ve kept the shutout going through the 8th,
if not the 9th, but after Ynoa went the distance during Saturday’s
loss, manager Pedro Lopez likely wanted to get the bullpen some work. Matt Koch
worked a perfect 8th, and Paul Sewald allowed a 2 out solo blast in
the 9th to end the shutout bid.
Cessa
has been underrated to this point, but I think that’s going to change over the
second half of the season, especially with all the prospect graduations in the
system this year. The Akron announcer made a point of saying that a scout told
him he thought Cessa was one of the best pitchers in the league. He had a great
game, but he didn’t work a clean inning until the 7th, although only
one runner made it as far as 3B. With two outs in the 6th, Yandy
Diaz lined a ball into the RF corner that Jared King probably should’ve played
on a hop, but he went full extension trying to make a diving catch and came up
empty, which gave Diaz the time to motor around to 3B. Cessa bailed King out by
retiring the next batter swinging – it was Anthony Gallas, who had been 2-2 to
that point.
This
series continues Monday night at 7:05 PM, with Michael Fulmer scheduled to
pitch for Binghamton.
Scoring Highlights
Aderlin
Rodriguez picked up the B-Mets first hit of the game with Jose Rodriguez (walk)
on 1B in the 5th. Xorge Carrillo was up next and he failed to get a
bunt down, popping out to the catcher instead. But Jared King would reach on an
E6 to load the bases for the suddenly ice cold Gavin Cecchini. Cheech came
through with a huge bases clearing double to LF, which was all Binghamton would
get Sunday.
Michael
Conforto picked up his single in the 8th.
