With the Las Vegas 51s needing a starter for Tuesday’s game, Rainy Lara
has been promoted and will make his first AAA start tonight.
UPDATE: Lara was demoted back to Binghamton after the start, but he is scheduled to start with Las Vegas again on Sunday (per the game notes).
The
New York Mets have promoted RH SP Rainy Lara from the Binghamton Mets to the Las
Vegas 51s for the June 16th start against Salt Lake. He has been
with Binghamton since the start of the 2014 season, posting a 10-6 record, with
a 4.06 ERA, and 112 K: 41 BB (16.2 K%: 5.9 BB%) in 161.2 IP. He got off to a
hot start this year, but had allowed 11 ER over 13.2 IP in the 3 starts prior
to his most recent start, which went much better (7 IP, 5 H, R, 4 K: 2 BB).
Although several Binghamton players have been promoted to Las Vegas already
this season, Lara is the first starting pitcher to make the jump.
Lara made his debut with the
organization in the Dominican Summer League during the 2010 season, coming
stateside for the first time in 2011. He spent 2 years in rookie ball, closing
games for the GCL Mets in 2011 before becoming a full time starter again with
Brooklyn in 2012. He started to gain some attention with his performance for
Brooklyn, as Mike Newman of Fangraphs
said, “Lara is not an impact talent, but has a Major League future if he
remains healthy.” He split 2013 between Savannah and St. Lucie, proving way too
good for the SAL, and then about average in the FSL. He started 2014 with
Binghamton about 1.5 years younger than the average age of the competition in
the Eastern League. He missed some time in June, and was inconsistent
throughout the season, but he still allowed 2 ER or less in 10 of 20 starts.
Stuff-wise, as the Newman quote
suggests, he’s not going to impress that much. He has good control of an 88-91
MPH fastball, a fringy slider that’s his best pitch, and an underwhelming
changeup – more here in
a recent BP eyewitness account from Chris Mellen. That can work against tougher
competition that AA, but Cashman Field and the PCL is going to be a big adjustment
for Lara, one that I think he might struggle with at first, especially
considering his fly ball tendencies.
It’s not clear yet if this is a permanent move
or just temporary, but either way, best of luck to Rainy Lara in his first AAA
start.
