Post-game recap: The St. Lucie Mets had the ‘fortune’ of facing two rehabbing major leaguers Monday night, including the dynamic ace of the Marlins Jose Fernandez, who is younger than 9 of the 12 St. Lucie players who participated in the game. After Fernandez worked through a quick first inning, Jupiter jumped out to a 2-0 lead, with the second run coming home on an error from Smith. Yefri Perez led off with a single, but would be caught trying to steal 2B. McGowan walked the next batter, before Austin Dean doubled to RF. Both runners would come home on a groundout to Evans, as Smith threw the ball away after the out at 1B was recorded. The Mets came out and picked up 2 of their 4 hits against Fernandez leading off the 2nd, but he struck out two of the next 3 as he escaped the jam. They would scratch a run off of Fernandez in the 6th, with Jeff McNeil stroking a one out triple into LF, and then scoring on a wild pitch. In the 9th, the Mets brought the tying run to the plate with one out, but Cruzado would strike out looking, and then Plaia popped out to 1B to end the game.

Post-game recap: The Cyclones run of great starting pitching continued Monday night against the Tri-City Valley Cats, with Matt Blackham stepping up big in his first start as a pro – he worked exclusively in relief last season after being drafted in the 29th round. Of course, they probably would’ve won even if they got a really poor performance from Blackham, as the offense was on fire. They scored in 5 of 8 frames, with multiple runs in 4 of those innings. Tucker Tharp led off the 1st with a single, and then scored on a two out bomb from Michael Bernal. They’d score 4 runs on 5 hits in the 3rd (another inning led off by a Tharp single), with a 2 run double from Jose Garcia capping it off. In the 4th, Fulmer and Tharp singled before a Siena walk to load the bases for Michael Katz. He’d keep the line moving with an RBI single to RF, and then Bernal brought home a second run on a sac fly to CF. Tharp led off the 6th with his fourth hit of the night, then scored on a sac fly from Katz. After Ramos reached on an error to start the 7th, Juan Santos walked the next 3 batters to bring him around. Vinny Siena followed with his first pro double to plate two, and there still hadn’t been a Cyclones player retires in the frame, which allowed two more runs to come home on ground outs to the right side (both handled by the second baseman). After allowing a hit in each of the first 3 innings, Blackham went ham and retired 13 of the next 14 batters before being replaced. Christian Montgomery came in for the 8th and struck out 3 in the frame, working around an E6 from Kaupe, who was making just his third pro appearance at SS – he had 5 swinging strikes from 21 pitches in the frame. In the 9th, 7th round pick Corey Taylor made his pro debut, allowing a leadoff double to the wall before retiring 3 in a row – he had 3 swinging strikes from 17 pitches in the frame.

Post-game recap: The GCL Mets had a disappointing loss in their season opener, and while their overall record probably doesn’t concern you, the players on the field definitely should. Making his first appearance since TJS last year, Jeff Walters started the game with a perfect scoreless inning – if you’ll recall, the Mets were very high on Walters last Spring Training. Also, the lineups featured several names you might recognize. Cespedes and De Aza are two of the Mets top international prospects. Burdick is from the 2014 draft. Brosher was off to a great start before getting hurt last year. Ricardo is a Cuban catcher who should see the upper levels of the minor leagues soon. Bautista is a 2015 draft pick. Back to the game, the pitching ruled the day, and the Mets pitching was perfect through 7. In the 6th, Brosher reached on a HBP, advanced to 2B on a balk, to 3B on a single from Moscote, and then scored on a double steal attempt (with Moscote thrown out on the play). Luis Carreno took over in the 7th and kept the perfect game alive for an inning, but then allowed a one out single in the 8th. The single was sandwiched between a strikeout and a pop out, so it’s not like he wasn’t cruising, but then he’d allow a two out HR to Erwin Almonte that completely changed the momentum of the game. The Mets would get a one out hit from Ricardo in the 9th, and pinch runner Cecilio Aybar would advance to 3B, but the final two batters couldn’t get him home.

Minors MVP of the Day – Some strong candidates (Smith had 2 hits off Jose Fernandez, Brock had 2 doubles), but Tharp and Bernal stood out to me. Of the two, Tharp played the whole game, reaching base and scoring in 5 PA’s from the leadoff spot.

Minors Cy of the Day – Making his first start as a pro, Matt Blackham was great over 7 scoreless innings for Brooklyn, relying on a four-seam fastball, with an effective knuckle curve and changeup, per their announcer. The 15.2 swinging strike % helps too!
