LHP, 19, 6'2", William T Dwyer HS (Fl)

Thomas Szapucki is a 2015 LHP with a 6-2 190 lb. frame from Palm Beach Gardens, FL who attends William T. Dwyer HS. Tall slender athletic build, lots of room to get stronger. Long loose arm action, low 3/4's low elbow arm slot, energy at release, very fast smooth arm coming through, still developing consistency in release and repeating mechanics. Low 90's fastball, topped out at 93 mph, late sinking and running life. Slider shows big sweeping depth and hard biting action at times, lots of power in his slider, potential plus pitch. rare change up is developing. Not a classic delivery or arm action but top shelf raw stuff. Good student, verbal commitment to Florida. Selected for the Perfect Game All-American Classic. ~6/12/2014

Szapucki's slider is one of the more defined signature pitches in the high school class of 2015, thrown hard in the low-80s with excellent two-plane break. He also throws his fastball consistently hard in the low-90s, routinely peaking at 93-94, and his stuff is firm enough for him to challenge batters high in the zone. There's some deception to his delivery as well, making him that much more difficult to hit, and he also throws a polished changeup.

Tom Szapucki, LHP, Dwyer HS, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida: University of Florida commit, can hit 92-95 and features an impressive breaking ball, low-angle delivery adds deception but makes him somewhat unconventional and raises some durability concerns. TT: Second/third round.

Astro Reaction

Another exciting left-handed high school pitcher? Yes please! Plenty of upside here with Szapucki, and a true 80-grade name in my opinion (the 80-grade name gets thrown around too often, but Szapucki is both fun to say and unique in baseball). I really like what the Mets did with their first 4 picks despite having no first rounder, as there are 3 HS guys with a lot of upside, and one College guy that appears to have a lot of right-handed power.
