Recap
For
the second straight start during this road trip, the Mets top prospect left in
the minors took a tough 1-0 loss for Las Vegas. Matz was not at his sharpest
Friday night, but he was also not getting help from the home plate ump, who had
a tight and inconsistent strike zone throughout. Per the stadium gun, this was
the fastest I’ve seen him, as the announcers were calling 96 MPH fastballs at
times throughout the start, and he even hit 97 – I’m guessing the gun was hot,
but maybe he just had a little extra adrenaline with the scent of majors in the
air around him. Unfortunately for Matz, the 51s offense has been terrible
during the road trip, scoring half of their runs during Thursday night’s loss,
and taking their third shutout in a week (two during Matz starts). They had one
real chance, picking up two hits with one out in the 2nd, but Matz
(who was batting 8th) would end any threat with a GIDP. The game was
called in the bottom of the 7th due to rain, and they didn’t wait
long to make this one official – the weather map did not look too serious, so
I’m wondering if the 51s (aka Wally) just wanted out of there.
The
51s head home Saturday to start a home stand against El Paso. They turn to
Tyler Pill to stop the losing streak at 10 games, but Pill has struggled at
Cashman Field this year.
This
section of the 51s recaps has been left nearly empty during the entire road
trip. Matt Reynolds did have a single, extending his hit streak to 5 games.
