Post-game recap: The
PSL Mets 4-game winning streak came to an abrupt halt in another extra-inning
affair at Clearwater when Aaron Brown hit the first pitch in the bottom of the
11th inning over the wall for a walkoff blast. St. Lucie got the
scoring started in the 3rd, with rehabbing Brandon Nimmo providing
an RBI double to drive home Champ Stuart. Stuart was hit by a pitch leading off
the 5th, and then went off to the races, stealing 2B, advancing to
3B on a groundout, and scoring on a wild pitch. Miller Diaz had been effective
through the first 4 IP, but then got wild in the 5th, walking 3 of
the first 4 batters, and then unleashing a wild pitch to allow a run.
Clearwater would tie the game on a sac fly, scoring twice in the frame without
a hit or error. It looked like St. Lucie would have a big inning in the 6th,
as Sabol walked and then moved to 3B on a single from Rosario, but Rosario was
caught trying to steal 2B, and so the Mets settled for 1 run on a sac fly. That
lead would not last long though, as Clearwater hit two straight doubles off of
Diaz in the bottom of the 6th to tie the game. Kelly Secrest would
replace Diaz in the frame with a runner on 3B, and he got the final out on a
groundout to 2B. St. Lucie didn’t really have many other scoring opportunities
the rest of the way, and then Regnault made a costly mistake at the start of
his 3rd inning of work, which allowed Clearwater to earn their first win in this series.
Pre-game notes: Miller
Diaz allowed less than 2 walks for just the second time in his last start, but
has still managed to allow just 3 ER or less in all 10 of his starts; Amed
Rosario had his second straight multi-hit game Tuesday night; Jeff Glenn had 2
extra base hits over his first 14 games this year (both doubles), but has a
double and HR over his last 2 starts; Jeff McNeil reached 3+ hits for the 6th
time this season Tuesday night; Matt Oberste has a 6-game hitting streak with 3
doubles during the stretch.

Post-game recap: Martires
Arias was cruising into the 6th inning Wednesday night, but
Asheville would score 2 runs off him to tie the game and knock him out of it,
which led to a long battle of the bullpens in Savannah. The Sand Gnats jumped
out to a 1-0 lead in the 1st on 3 singles. Johnson lined one into CF
to lead off the frame, went to 3B on an infield single from Becerra, and then
score on Mora’s first hit of the game. Patrick Biondi did his speed thing to
generate the Gnats second run in the 2nd: he reached on a two out
single into RF, stole 2B, and then scored on a single lined into LF. After
that, things went downhill for the Savannah offense, as they’d manage 9 hits (8
singles) against 16 strikeouts over the final 11 innings – three guesses who
was behind the plate (hint: the only SAL ump I know by name is Reid Joyner). With
one out in the 8th inning, Josh Fuentes hit a flare into CF that
Biondi initially paused on, but then he made up the ground to make a nice
sliding catch. Unfortunately, he’d leave the game in the bottom of the frame in
place of Lupo, possibly for Lupo’s power potential, but it was a move that
would turn out to play a huge role in this game – the announcer speculated that
Biondi might have hurt something on the play, because otherwise the switch made
little sense, especially with a righty on the mound. After Arias, the Gnats
bullpen was ridiculous, with the three lefties combining to allow only 3 hits
over the next 5.1 IP. It’s hard to blame Paez for how things went down in the
13th, as a two-base error opened the door for a big inning, and then
he was told to intentionally walk two batters, and on top of that, he was approaching 50+ pitches as he worked
with the bases loaded in that frame. After striking out in his first two AB’s,
Lupo botched a fly ball in LF to start the 13th inning, which
allowed Forrest Wall to reach 2B. With the bases loaded and one out, Luis Jean
pulled a single into RF to bring home the go-ahead run. They’d add another run
on a sac fly (to Lupo), which was more than enough for Josh Michalec. Lupo was
the final batter of the game, and he’d strike out swinging to end a very
unfortunate night.
Pre-game notes: Martires
Arias has lasted only 4 IP in each of his last 2 stars, and has failed to
complete 5 IP in 3 of his last 4 starts – he worked into the 7th inning
in each of the 4 starts prior to this most recent stretch; Luis Guillorme had
his second 2 double game of the season last night, with both coming in the past
week; Guillorme also has only one stretch of two games without a hit this year,
and definitely merited SAL All Star consideration; Tomas Nido has a hit in 8 of
10 games, with 2 doubles, a triple, 2 homeruns, and 4 multi-hit games during
that stretch.
Minors MVP of the Day
– If Michael Conforto makes you swoon, it’s ok, and you’re not alone. The Mets
have brought him along slowly, and there really is no need to rush him through
the minors, but they could probably speed things up at any point and Conforto
wouldn’t miss a beat.
Minors Cy of the Day
– Cessa was really good for his 4th straight start, but Steven Matz
might’ve thrown a shutout if the Mets didn’t have him on a pitch count. He’s
been ready for a while now, it’s just a matter of opening a spot for him – it
should be noted that the Mets have essentially zero starting pitcher depth healthy
and major league ready behind Matz, as Duane Below is on the DL and Dillon Gee is
status unknown for now.
