Recap
Brooklyn
Cyclones baseball is back! And they started their season with a great game
against the rival Staten Island Yankees. Tyler Badamo was sharp over his 6
innings, but the Cyclones bats couldn’t provide him with much run support, and
so the sold out crowd in attendance got some free baseball. The Cyclones were
the first team to break the tie in extras, and then Gaither Bumgardner held
onto the opening day win for Brooklyn.
By
the end of 2014, Tyler Badamo had forced himself into the GCL starting
rotation, and was getting some very nice results – 4 GS, 1.42 ERA, 19 IP, 12 H,
13 K: 3 BB, .487 OPS allowed. It’s only one start, but he appears to have
picked up right where he left off last season. He calmly worked around 2 errors
by infielders behind him in the 1st (recording 3 pop outs in the
frame), and then quickly retired 3 in a row after allowing the two-run homerun
in the 2nd. He issued a free pass on 5 pitches to begin the 2nd,
so it’s understandable that Jhalan Jackson was sitting dead red when he came
up, and Jackson jumped on the first pitch fastball for a long homerun to LF
that got out in a hurry. He’d retire the next 12 in a row, including 2 more pop
outs induced during the 3rd, and 4 of his strikeouts. His streak was
ended by Kyle Holder’s first professional hit in the 6th, but Badamo
struck out the next batter, and worked through another scoreless frame.
Pedro
Perez helped the Cyclones scratch out their first run in the 4th
when he pulled a double down the LF line with two outs, and then scored on a
Tharp double two batters later. Jose Garcia had extended the inning with a
single, but he was thrown out trying to score on Tharp’s double, which
one-hopped the RF wall – it should be noted that Garcia will no longer be
switch hitting, just sticking to the left side per manager Tom Gamboa. They’d
tie the game with a run in the 6th, although they’d record 0 hits in
the frame. Michael Katz led off with a walk, advanced to 2B on a wild pitch, to
3B on a groundout, and then scored on another wild pitch.
The
game would remain tied until the 12th, when the Cyclones finally
broke through, but both sides had their chances. Notably, the Yanks got a
leadoff double in the 10th, and the Cyclones got a leadoff double in
the 11th, but neither team could capitalize. In the 12th,
Enmanuel Zabala led off with a walk, went to 2B on a sac bunt, and then scored
on a two out single from Michael Bernal. Gaither Bumgardner had worked around a
double in the 11th, and then worked a 1-2-3 12th inning,
retiring the final two batters with strikeouts.
The
series continues in Brooklyn Saturday evening at 6 PM, with Gaby Almonte
scheduled to pitch for the Cyclones. Hear from Tyler Badamo here, and check out some other Cyclones interviews from media care of the 1495Sports YouTube page.
