Post-game recap: It was a long battle, but in the end, St. Lucie came out a winner, ensuring a good night’s sleep for the good guys. 2014 College free agent Michael Gibbons made his pro debut for St. Lucie, and he was extremely effective against the relatively advanced competition, allowing only 3 base runners over his 7 innings. Clearwater starter Colin Kleven was matching Gibbons batter-for-batter early, but St. Lucie would finally break through against him in the 5th. Amed Rosario led off with a walk, but was just standing at 2B with 2 outs and Champ Stuart due up. Fortunately, Stuart came through with a double lined over the right fielder’s head and one-hopping off the wall – the Clearwater announcers made it seem like it would have been a hit regardless, but they noted that the right fielder was playing very shallow. Brandon Nimmo led off the 6th with a walk and then came around to score for a 2-0 lead. Maikis had followed with a single to move Nimmo to 3B with 0 outs, but a GIDP from Dom Smith ended any threat. After allowing a one out infield single in the 3rd (the runner was thrown out trying to advance to 2B on the play anyway), Gibbons would retire 11 straight through the 7th, when he hit FSL All Star Andrew Knapp with a pitch. He’d bounce back to strikeout the next batter, and then a fly out to LF ended the 7th and his night. Kelly Secrest was the first to replace Gibbons, and he immediately found himself in trouble, allowing a single and double to put runners on 2B and 3B with 0 outs. The only run Clearwater could score would come on a sac fly, but the lead had been cut in half. Without Akeel Morris around to save the game, the Mets turned to Josh Smoker for the save in the 9th, but he couldn’t protect the 1-run lead. Andrew Pullin led off with a single grounded into RF against Smoker, and then Knapp doubled him home on a grounder down the LF line that was bobbled by Sabol. Smoker recovered to finish the inning strong, and then worked a scoreless 10th, but the damage had been done. After scoring in the 6th, St. Lucie’s offense went quiet against Clearwater’s bullpen, until the 13th. Sabol hit a one out double in the 13th, and then scored on an RBI single from Rosario. Kyle Regnault was left for the next save opportunity, and he was excellent, striking out the final two batters of the game, including Mr. Knapp.

Post-game recap: The Sand Gnats lost their third straight game against Hickory Monday night, as the Crawdads jumped on two of Casey Meisner’s only mistakes for all 4 of their runs, and the Gnats bats were shut down. Savannah has played several games with Ump Reid Joyner calling balls and strikes behind the plate, and they’ve all ended with 10+ strikeouts for Gnats batters. Tonight was no different, and Vicente Lupo’s frustration boiled over after his strikeout in the 7th, which led to a long argument and his eventual ejection. The Gnats jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 2nd when Eudor Garcia doubled, went to 3B on a balk, and scored on a groundout. Meisner was cruising through the 3rd, retiring the first two batters in short order, but then Josh Morgan doubled to LF and Eduard Pinto hit a 2R bomb to RF. Same thing happened to Meisner in the 4th, as he retired the first two, but then Hickory collected a single and 2R bomb off the bat of Rock Shoulders to make it a 4-1 game. Meisner would retire the final 9 batters that he’d face before being replaced with two outs in the 7th as he reached his pitch limit. Meisner was mostly sitting 90-92 MPH with his fastball, and it sounded like his curveball was getting swinging strikes throughout the night. David Roseboom kept things scoreless over the final 1.1 innings for Savannah, but the offense couldn’t get anything going, with 4 strikeouts from the final 6 batters of the night (15 total).

Minors MVP of the Day – Allen continued his huge homestand with a 3-hit, 2-double performance in the opener against Salt Lake Monday night.

Minors Cy of the Day – Michael Gibbons was a beast in his first pro start, throwing 7 shutout innings with only 3 base runners allowed, and sitting around 93 MPH with his fastball.
