Akeel Morris is going
to Binghamton, which makes a lot more sense than him jumping from A+ to the
Majors. He has good stuff, but, as you might’ve noticed, he needs to improve
his control. Logan Verrett heads to the Mets pen in his place, which needed to
happen a few days later because Verrett threw 85 pitches in a start for Las
Vegas Sunday.

Post-game recap: St.
Lucie blew a huge lead against Clearwater in the finale, and so they finish the
first half just one game over .500. The Mets exploded for 5 runs in the 3rd
inning, recording 4 straight hits to begin the frame, and then getting 2 key
two out RBI hits. Oberste led off with a triple to LF, and then came home when
Dom single into LF. Rosario kept things rolling with his only hit of the night,
and then they’d both score on a triple from Cruzado grounded down the RF line.
The next two batters failed to get Cruzado home, but Champ would come up with a
big single into RF. Stuart would steal 2B with McNeil batting, and then scored
when he singled into RF – McNeil was caught trying to advance to 2B, bailing
the pitcher out of his tailspin. The Mets would add another pair in the 3rd
when Cruzado singled home Oberste and Smith with two outs. Logan Taylor took
the mound in the 4th with a 7-0 lead, but he’d allow 6 of 7 batters
to reach before he got the boot, leaving after walking Carlos Tocci to load the
bases – the inning went like this: HBP, 1B, 2 RBI 2B, pop out, 1B, RBI 1B, BB.
With the all star break to look forward to this weekend, the Mets brought in
Whalen to piggyback for this start, but perhaps they should’ve waited and let
him start the 5th, as the first batter tagged him for a game-tying
grand slam. Whalen got a little wild in the 5th, walking two
batters, the second of which loaded the bases with 0 outs. Whalen would retire
the next 3 batters, but a sac fly gave Clearwater their first lead. McNeil led
off the 7th with a single, stole 2B, and then scored on a single
from Smith to tie the game. That tie would last until the 9th, when
Whalen couldn’t retire a batter before the Thresher walked off with a win.
Pre-game notes: After not going beyond 5 innings in his first 4 starts, Taylor has pitched into the 6th inning in his last 7 starts, and turned it up a notch over his past 3 starts: 19.2 IP, 2 ER, 15 H, 9 K: 8 BB, .539 OPS allowed; Amed Rosario has 3 straight 2-hit games; Champ Stuart has his first 3-game hit streak since early May.

Post-game recap: Scarlyn
Reyes pitched quite a beautiful game for Savannah, coming up one out shy of a
9-inning CG, which is pretty rare in the SAL. Since Gameday has been available
for this series in Savannah, I charted his pitch stats by inning below, and you
can see that he was getting swinging strikes throughout the night – 18%
swinging strike rate is impressive. Unfortunately for Reyes, the Gnats ran into
a great start from Grahamm Wiest, who matched him through 6 scoreless innings,
and handed things to his pen with a 1-0 lead. In the 7th, the
Tourists got a break when Jon Leroux committed a fielding error, which opened
the door for the first run of the game. Leroux had entered the game after Eudor
Garcia was ejected, apparently for ‘arguing balls and strikes’ after his
strikeout (probably just said the wrong word, wasn’t able to listen in to this
game). The start at 1B marked Eudor’s first in the minors, but hopefully it
doesn’t indicate a permanent move there for him – my guess is that the Gnats
want the best possible defensive lineup for the playoff push this weekend. Back
to this game, with two outs in the 7th and a runner on 2B (from the
error), Reyes allowed an RBI single lined back up the middle. But the Gnats
would pick up their starter in the bottom of the frame, striking for two runs
to take the lead. Mora led off with a triple, but only came home to score when
Forrest Wall made a fielding error with two outs in the inning. After Abreu
walked to keep the inning alive, Johnson lined a single into LF for the go
ahead run. They’d tack on a key insurance run in the 8th, with a one
out single from Leroux starting the rally. After a fielder’s choice put Mora on
the base paths (a big upgrade in speed), JC doubled him to 3B, and he’d score
on a wild pitch. Poor defense to start the 9th prevented Reyes from
finishing this game, as he failed to get an out on a weak groundout back near
the mound, and then a throwing error from JC allowed Shane Hoelscher to reach
on a sac bunt. Reyes struck out the next batter, but Asheville would draw one
run closer on a groundball force out to Johnson, with the out recorded at 2B on
the play. With 100 pitches on the night, manager Jose Leger brought in the
Duff-man, and James Duff finished the job with a strikeout.
Pre-game notes: Scarlyn Reyes is coming off his worst start of the season, as he allowed 6 ER over 6 IP, which matched the ER total Reyes had allowed over his previous 4 starts; David Roseboom has 11 straight scoreless appearances for Savannah (10.2 IP), and has kept his opponent scoreless in 20 of 22 appearances on the year; after only one 3-hit game over his first 43 appearances of the season, Wuilmer Becerra has three 3-hit games and one 4-hit game over his last 18 appearances; John Mora has 7 XBH (4 2B, 3 3B) over his past 10 games played.
Minors MVP of the Day
– There are several serious contenders for this award, with multiple 3-hit nights, and multi-extra base hit performances. He's not the big sexy prospect, but Josh Rodriguez continued his big year with Binghamton, and earned the nod for coming up a triple shy of the cycle.

– This was a bit easier, as Scarlyn Reyes might've thrown a 'Maddux' (CG SO on less than 100 pitches) with better defense in the 9th.
