Post-game recap: St. Lucie got another strong performance from Logan Taylor, and some big nights within the heart of their order, as they easily won over St. Lucie Friday night. The Mets got on the board in the 2nd when Victor Cruzado completed one of the rarer events in a baseball game: hitting an infield the park homerun (in this case, with two runners on base). They’d add a pair in the 3rd when McNeil led off with a single, and then Murphy and Smith hit back-to-back doubles. Bradenton finally broke through for a run off Taylor in the 5th, picking up two singles and a stolen base in the frame. But McNeil, Murphy and Smith had 3 straight hits to start the bottom of the 5th, including Smith’s second double of the game – Amed Rosario would add an RBI single and stolen base in the frame. McNeil hit his 10th double of the year in the 6th, and Murph drove him in with a single to RF. Hilario took over in the 8th and his struggles since being promoted to Binghamton earlier this year continued, as he allowed singles to the first two batters of the frame, and then a 2 out double that brought them both home. After Ruiz hit a one out single in the 8th, the Mets capped their scoring behind consecutive hits from McNeil/Murphy/Smith for the third time in the game.

Foster Griffin (0-2, 7.64 ERA) @ Martires Arias (3-3, 3.28 ERA)

Yesterday: L 6-2 (Savannah, Lexington)

Post-game recap: Martires Arias was as dominant as a pitcher can be for most of his start Friday night, but he lost control during a long 2nd inning, which allowed the Legends to jump out to a lead they would only briefly relinquish. Arias struck out the side in the 1st, but then allowed the first 4 to reach in the 2nd: single, walk, walk, RBI walk. The next two batters hit groundouts, including an inning ending double play, but the Legends had taken a 2-0 lead. Savannah would get a runner in scoring position in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th innings, but they couldn’t get the runner home. Lupo finally got them on the board with a solo homerun in the 7th, his second blast in as many days, making it a 3-1 game. Johnson and Guillorme drew walks leading off the 8th, and then both came around to score without the assistance of a Savannah hit: wild pitch, RBI force out, sac fly. Baldonado allowed the first 3 to reach in the 9th before James Duff replaced him, but Duff would allow all 3 runners to score before finally finishing the frame. JC Rodriguez led off the 9th with a triple, and then scored when Mora reached on an E3, but the Gnats comeback efforts would come up short, as the next three went down in order.

Post-game recap: Gaby Almonte bounced back from a rough 1st inning to give the Cyclones a great start Friday night, and the offense overcame the early 1-0 deficit to get him his first win of 2015. Almonte allowed singles to the first two batters of the game, but he would’ve had a 1-2-3 inning with good defense: the leadoff batter reached on a single misplayed by Siena, and then Jose Zambrano reached on a bunt single. However, Almonte has no one to blame but himself for the run that would score, as he was paying too much attention to Zambrano at 1B, and his final throw over bounced off of Zambrano’s helmet and up the RF line, allowing the runners to advanced 2 bases. The Cyclones would tie it up in the 2nd thanks to Michael Katz, who had a huge night. Katz hit a one out double, stole 3B, and then scored on a throwing error after his steal. In the 4th, Michael Bernal sparked the game-winning rally with a one out single to CF. Bernal would advance to 2B on a balk, and then score on an RBI single from David Thompson, the first hit of his pro career. Katz followed with a 2R bomb to LF for some insurance runs. After the long 1st inning, Almonte averaged just under 11 pitches/inning, with a very strong 13% swinging strike rate over those final 5 innings. He retired 10 of the final 11 batters that he faced, with a HBP to Will Allen leading off the 6th his only blemish during that span. The Cyclones pen was nearly perfect over their 3 innings, but closer Alex Palsha issued a two out walk. Nicco Blank threw 9 of 14 pitches for strikes, which is a positive sign, and P.J. Conlon needed only 7 pitches in his first pro inning.

Post-game recap: Connor Buchmann battled control problems that just got worse throughout the start, eventually leading to a 4 run 4th inning for Bluefield, who just kept adding on after that. The Mets jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 2nd when Berrios singled home Dionis. In the 4th, Buchmann allowed the 4 runs despite only 2 singles allowed. With one out and a runner on 1B, he walked Christian Williams, and then hit the next two batters to force home a run. After a sac fly brought home the second run, Buchmann issued another walk to re-load the bases. Andrew Guillote would follow with a two out, two run single to LF, but Kaczmarski was able to get Rodrigo Orozco trying to advance to 3B. The K-Mets made things interesting for a moment in the 4th, scoring two runs on an E6 and sac fly, but then Bluefield erupted for 6 against Jose Figura in the 5th. It was a 13-3 game when Ramirez tripled to spark a 5-run 8th, but the comeback was too little too late for this team – the next 5 batters reached on base hits, including a ground-rule double for Dash, and they’d bat around in the inning. The K-Mets had planned to use real relief pitcher's in this game, but the manager forgot to put them on his lineup card, making them ineligible for this game.

GCL Mets 0-2

Wilber Pena @ Ronald Guedez
vs. GCL Nationals (1-2) at 12:00 PM
Yesterday: Suspended (Rain) – L 2-1, finished today
Today: W 5-2 F/7, Guedez (1.80 ERA) – 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R (1 ER), 2 SO, HR, 11 GO
Lineup
CF – Ricardo Cespedes – 0-1, RBI (1), SAC, SF, SO

SS – Dale Burdick – 0-2, SO

RF – Kenneth Bautista – 3-3, R, 2B (1), RBI (2), SB (2)
2B – Alvin Maracaro – 1-3, R, SO
3B – Walter Rasquin – 1-2, SAC, SO
DH – Cecilio Aybar – 2-3, R
Bullpen:
Sixto Torres (W, 1-0, 0.00 ERA) – 1 IP, 2 GO: 1 FO
Eucebio Arias (S, 1, 0.00 ERA) – 1 IP, 1 GO: 1 FO

Post-game recap: The GCL Mets finished their rain suspended game from yesterday, which ended in a 2-1 loss, and then played a 7-inning affair after that. The Mets signed Friday’s starter, 19-year old Ronald Guedez, for $170,000 during the 2012 signing period, and Ben Badler profiled him at 88-92 MPH, with a potential power curve, and feel for his change, but the need to sharpen his control. The 0 walks and 11 groundouts are great – he had 0 walks in 14 IP at the DSL level before the GCL season started – the homerun allowed less so, but perhaps another arm to keep an eye on down the road. The Mets 17th round pick Sixto Torres made his pro debut, throwing a scoreless inning – I was happy they signed him, so it’s cool to see that he’s already pitching. The Nationals took a 2-0 lead in the 1st on a leadoff homerun and an RBI – a Brosher throwing error allowed a runner to take 3B after stealing 2B. Bautista led off the 2nd with a single, stole 2B, and then came home on a single/E6 from Rasquin. They tied it with a run on two singles and an E1 in the 5th, and then stormed ahead when Brosher and Bautista hit back-to-back doubles leading off the 6th.

Minors MVP of the Day – Dominic’s 4-hits and 2 doubles have him up to a .777 OPS, which is more than double the OPS he had on May 11 (.385).

Minors Cy of the Day – Martires Arias has had some big performances lately, but didn’t last long in those performances, but he kept his pitch count down as the K’s racked up this time.
