There might not be many more Minor League Matz day’s left, as there have been recent rumblings that the Mets might move him to the rotation soon; Matz allowed 4 walks in his most recent start against Memphis, and that is his second start with at least 4 walks this year (he allowed 5 walks on 4/14); Daniel Muno returns to the team, again; Matt Reynolds had an 8-game hitting streak snapped in the last game, and he was 13-31 with 5 doubles and a bomb during the streak; Wilfredo Tovar is riding a modest 6-game hitting streak, but more impressively, he’s 15 for 19 on stolen base attempts, with a career high of 17 stolen bases in a season (back in rookie ball); including the last 3 AB’s of his start on 5/26, T.J. Rivera is now 0 for his last 38.

Pre-game notes: Luis Cessa is coming off two straight brilliant starts, allowing just 1 run over a combined 13.2 IP, with just 7 hits allowed, and 13 K: 1 BB – the only run came on a solo blast; Gavin Cecchini still hasn’t gone two straight games without a hit this season; Michael Conforto has reached base in every game with Binghamton; L.J. Mazzilli has been sandwiched between the two in Bowie.

Post-game recap: Luis Cessa continued beasting in Bowie Thursday night, throwing 6 shutout innings on only 80 pitches to help lead Binghamton to an easy 6-0 win. Although it’s apparently nothing serious, of note is that Gavin Cecchini was scratched after ‘feeling something during BP.’ Cessa would allow two singles in the 1^st, but then retired the final two in the frame, and would allow only two more base runners in the game. Binghamton jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 2^nd when Aderlin Rodriguez hit a no-doubter to LF. After allowing a two out walk in the 2^nd, Cessa set down 10 in a row before Glynn Davis reached on an infield single to J Rod. J Rod was responsible for extending the lead with a 3R bomb in the 4^th. Mazzilli and Conforto would walk with one out in the 5^th, and then both came home on a double lined into RF from Brock Peterson, who has predictably done well in AA so far. That would be it for both sides, as the bullpens were effective. The B-Mets won a series for the first time in June, pulling back to within one game of .500.

Post-game recap: The Mets were dealt a pretty big blow in the 1^st inning of the first game of their double-header Thursday, losing Jeff McNeil for the night when he got in the hand with a pitch. McNeil would stay in to run in the 1^st, getting stranded at 3B in the inning, but then didn’t come out for the 2^nd inning or game two. The Daytona manager didn’t even believe he was hit with the pitch, apparently having the umpire check his glove for a scuffmark. Daytona would jump ahead 1-0 thanks to a solo homerun from Taylor Sparks in the 2^nd, it was the third homerun Gant had allowed in 3 starts (all solo shots, so far). Gant was otherwise terrific, striking out two in the 1^st, 3 in the 3^rd, and then 3 in the 5^th. The Mets would jump ahead thanks to two Dayton errors in the 6^th, the first let Reyes reach, and the second allowed Oberste to score from 3B. Oberste had reached on a walk, and then Dom Smith lofted an RBI single into left center. The throw from the center fielder went to 3B, but it was wide and ended up in the dugout. Unfortunately, the Tortuga’s would charge ahead with 3 runs in the bottom of the 6^th, as Sebastian Elizalde would hit a homerun off of Gant, this one coming with a runner on. But St. Lucie wouldn’t give up, loading the bases on 3 straights singles to start the top of the 7^th – the last frame of the game in minor league double-headers. After the first two reached, Yeixon was due up what would normally be a bunt situation, but with the inexperienced Reyes on deck instead of McNeil, the manager came down to talk approach. Apparently he told Ruiz to try bunting for a hit, and that’s exactly what he’d do, loading the bases for a guy with only a handful of PA’s above rookie ball. After falling behind 0-2, Reyes worked a nice AB, but eventually ended up waving at a changeup. Fortunately, Maikis De La Cruz followed with a two run single to tie it, and then Smith put St. Lucie ahead with an RBI hit for the second straight inning. Akeel Morris came in for the save and retired the first two batters before walking Carlton Daal on four pitches. Ervin followed with a single to LF, but because De La Cruz was playing so deep, Daal never stopped running, forcing a surprised Maikis to rush a throw in, sailing it over the cut off man’s head as the tying run came in to score. Coles would replace Morris in the 8^th, and he’d allow a walk and an RBI walk-off double to end game 1.

Pre-game notes: After a rainout Wednesday, St. Lucie will try to play 2 Thursday; per the radio announcer, Daytona has an extremely poor drainage system, so it takes a lot less rain to call a game there; Gant has allowed jut 3 R in his 14 IP with St. Lucie, posting a great 17 K: 4 BB ratio, although he’s allowed two homeruns; Diaz has allowed 14 BB in his last 17 IP, with only 12 K; Dominic Smith has 13 multi-hit games – 39 hits total, including 19 doubles and 2 homeruns – In his last 27 starts (with only 2 AB in one of those games); Amed Rosario has 11 multi-hit games in that same span, slashing .308/.351/.402 with 6 doubles and 2 triples, and a 17 K: 6 BB ratio in 114 PA; Jeff McNeil has a .966 OPS against lefties this year.

Post-game recap: The Mets couldn’t salvage a win in the nightcap of their double-header in Daytona, and so they’d have to settle for a split in their 4-game series. Miller Diaz allowed a walk to the first Tortugas batter of the game, and he’d score on a groundout 3 batters later, so it looked like it would be one of those nights for Diaz – see the pre-game notes – but he ended up showing better control than he has in any start, walking only 1 for just the second time this year (last time was 4/21, when he struck out 6 and allowed 0 ER and 3 H). The Mets were quick to tie things up, with an oppo taco double from Sabol getting the 2^nd inning rally started. The Mets would load the bases – HBP and BB – but only got the one run home on a sac fly. Diaz did something amazing in the bottom of the 2^nd inning, striking out all 4 batters he faced, including 3 down swinging. Ruiz had a nice game in the nightcap, and he’d double home Cruzado to give St. Lucie the lead in the 5^th. But again, Daytona jumped right back in front with two in the bottom of the inning. The first two reached on singles, and then the tying run came home on a sac fly. With two outs, Diaz allowed a triple to Alex Blandino to give the Tortugas the lead back. The Mets got the first two on in the 7^th, but they had Cruzado sac them to 2B and 3B, then Ruiz followed with a strikeout and Maikis with a groundout.

Pre-game notes: Arias had 7 strikeouts in his last start, but lasted just 4 innings, allowing a run on 2 hits and 3 walks; Luis Guillorme has been heating up again after a cold couple of weeks, and he can push himself back above a .700 OPS with a good night; facing tougher competition in the SAL this year, Wuilmer Becerra has surpassed his rookie ball output from 2014 in fewer games/AB’s; Eudor Garcia has three 3-hit games in his last 6 starts, and 7 total for the season – and he’s has some nice power potential in his bat too; Tomas Nido has 5 multi-hit games and 5 XBH (2 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR) in his last 10 games; John Mora has a modest 5-game hitting streak, with 4 XBH (3 2B, 1 3B) during the stretch; Vicente Lupo is currently slashing .197/.294/.303, so he’s on the verge of getting off the interstate (and back above a .300 OBP); SAL All-Star Jonathan Johnson has a 6-game hitting streak going.

Post-game recap: The Gnats came out on the right side of a back-and-forth affair with the Power for their 9^th straight win. John Mora gave Savannah a 1-0 lead with an RBI triple in the 4^th, scoring Luis Guillorme from 1B. But the Power had threatened with a runner in scoring position in each of the first 3 innings, and then broke through for 2 in the bottom of the 4^th, taking a 2-1 lead. For the second straight start, Arias was knocked out after 4 innings, but this time he wasn’t as sharp. Ben Griset was the first to replace Arias, and he worked around a walk through his first two innings but then got burned by a leadoff single in the 7^th – the runner advanced to 3B with Griset on the mound, and then James Duff allowed a double to the first man he faced from the bullpen. Savannah went into the 9^th down 3-1, but they’d quickly tie it up with a single and a blast off the bat of Jon Leroux – Leroux hit a game-winning homerun in May. Biondi followed with a single, stole 2B, went to 3B on infield single, and then scored the go-ahead run on a sac fly from Lupo. The BOOM came in for the 9^th and worked a 1-2-3 inning, striking out Tyler Filliben for the final out.

Minors MVP of the Day – Wilfredo Tovar reached base 5 times from the leadoff spot, with 2 stolen bases (tying his career high) and 3 RBI's.

Minors Cy of the Day – Luis Cessa is now down to a 0.92 ERA over his last 3 starts (19.2 IP), with 15 K: 2 BB, 22 GO: 15 FO, and just 10 H allowed in that span.
