Post-game recap: The
Mets used a balanced offensive attack and another strong FSL start from Gant to
win their 4th straight Tuesday night. The Mets jumped out to a
commanding 4-0 lead in the 3rd, sparked by a leadoff double from
Glenn. There were 3 RBI hits in the inning: Nimmo singled home Glenn Smith
singled home Nimmo, and Rosario singled home De La Cruz (isn’t that beautiful?).
An error by the Clearwater SS gave the Mets a scoring opportunity in the 6th,
and Maikis came through with a two out RBI single. John Gant was cruising for
most of the start, hitting 93 MPH with his fastball at times throughout (per
the Clearwater radio), and keeping the Threshers scoreless until the 6th.
He’d retire the first two batters in the frame, but then everything started
going wrong, with the next four batters picking up hits off of him – single,
single, RBI single, RBI double – before he walked the final batter he’d face on
the night. Edioglis Villasmil came into a bases loaded situation and induced a
groundout to Smith to end the frame. He’d stay in for two more innings and
allow only a HBP (and the base runner was erased on a double play). Although
there were 4 errors in the game – 3 by Rosario – the Clearwater announcers made
a point to spend some time raving about the team’s defense, particularly Smith,
who they said has likely saved multiple errors with picks at 1B.

Delgado continued an excellent start to his minors’ career in the opener
against Asheville, reaching a double-digit strikeout total for the first time,
while throwing 78% strikes. The Gnats jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 3rd
when Luis Guillorme doubled down the LF line to bring home JC from 2B. Delgado
had retired the first 12 batters of the game (6 via the strikeout), but ran
into trouble right away in the 5th, allowing a single to each of the
first two batters. After a sac bunt advanced the runners, the tying run would
come home on a groundout to 2B. However, the Tourists were not done, as they’d
score another run in the frame on two more singles. The only other hits allowed
by Delgado came with two outs in the 6th, and a base runner was
erased trying to go to 3B on the second hit anyway, so he didn’t face any other
real threats. Becerra started the 7th inning rally that tied the
game with a leadoff single grounded back up the middle, and he’d score on Tomas
Nido’s first RBI hit of the night. A fielding error by JC extended the 8th,
so Jose Leger brought in Jimmy Duff for the final out of the frame, which he
got on a pop out to 2B. Then Savannah took charge, with Guillorme’s second
double of the night (and 4th in the last week) sparking a big rally
in the bottom of the 8th. Guillorme would score on a bases loaded
walk to Jon Leroux, and then Nido and JC followed with RBI singles for a 5-2
lead. A sac fly to CF from Tyler Moore brought home Leroux for the 4th
run of the inning, providing more than enough padding for the BOOM, who worked
a 1-2-3 inning. The victory, combined with a Greenville loss, has them tied for first with Greenville as the first-half comes to a close - the first-half division winners clinch a spot in the postseason, so expect some promotions after the SAL ASB.

– Guillorme’s doubles were key for the Gnats victory, as the first one led to a
run, and the second one sparked the game-winning rally.
Minors Cy of the Day
– Casey Delgado had his best start yet, reaching a double-digit strikeout total
in just his fourth minor league start – not bad for a guy who thought he’d
spend the summer pitching in an Independent League. Delgado now has a 27.1 K%: 3.1
BB% ratio, with only 19 hits allowed in 24.2 IP for Savannah.
