Recap
Michael
Fulmer was just nasty for Binghamton Monday night, but the B-Mets managed just
2 hits against Akron starter Mike Clevinger, and ended up shutout for the
second time during this 3-game set in Akron. Conforto hit a two out single in
the 1st, Carrillo hit a leadoff double in the 6th, and
Binghamton got nothing else from their offense during this game. Beck Wheeler
took over for Fulmer when he reached his pitch count after 7 innings, and
Wheeler worked a perfect 8th to preserve the 1-0 game for the top of
the order in the 9th.
Did
I mention that Fulmer was nasty in this game? Because he was Nas-Tee – 20 swinging strikes in this
game (gameday credited him with a swinging strike on a foul ball), mostly from
a mid-90’s fastball and a big breaking slider, although he did mix in some
high-80’s changeups as well. The 9 strikeouts match a career high, and he’s now
made 4 straight dominant starts for Binghamton, with a 0.37 ERA over 24.1 IP
during the span, thanks to 26 K: 4 BB and only 15 hits allowed. Fulmer struck
out the side in the 1st, and allowed only a weakly hit single over
the first 3 innings. Ryan Rohlinger led off the 4th with a single,
and then went to 3B when Gavin Cecchini threw a potential double play grounder
into RF for his 17th error of the season. Rohlginger would come home
on an RBI groundout two batters later for the game’s only run. After the error,
Fulmer would retire 10 of the final 11 Akron batters to face him, and the only
batter to reach (Gallas doubled to lead off the 7th) was erased from
the base paths when Carrillo picked him off at 2B.
Looking
ahead, the B-Mets head to Erie to start a series with the Sea Wolves Tuesday
night at 7:05 PM, with Robert Gsellman scheduled to pitch for Binghamton.
Scoring Highlights
Michael
Conforto was credited with a single for this excuse me contact in the 1st. Also, check out this side view of his swing from later in the game.
Xorge Carrillo led off the 6th with a double into left center field, but he’d be stranded at 3B.
Bonus
Gavin
Cecchini committed his 17th error of the season, the majority of
which have come on his throws, and it led to the only run of the game.
